  1. I have more nesting boxes than I do birds. My birds bred fine when I had 50 of them.. The nesting boxes are 1 meter apart and all the same height off the ground to prevent fighting. They all look exactly the same. Are you saying that if I get 20 budgies they wont breed in a colony?

  2. Update:

I have 8 budgies 6 quails and 1 cockatiel left. I've removed the grass clippings and cleaned out the entire avairy. I've covered half of the uncovered area with a shadecloth so that birds in the tree above wotn give diseases to my birds. They still have an area of about 2 meters by 2 meters where they get full sunlight. They mainly sit out in the sunlight all day and only go undercover at night. I bought some straw (with absolutley no mould or chemicals) and laid it on the ground for the quails. I also put some rat sack around the outside of the avairy and I cemented 2 feet down all around so that the rats cant get under. I am going to buy 1 more cockatiel so that my other cockatiel has a mate. Also, If anyone knows how to tell if a budgie is in breeding condition, please pm me or post here and I will send pics of my birds. I need to know this because if they are in breeding condition, I wont need to go and buy more budgies.

    Thanks for your time

  3. Hello all

I have 12 budgies, 6 quails and 1 cockatiel left (I lost 27 budgies, 2 quails and 1 cockatiel to an unknown disease/rat problem). I've fixed up my avairy and im going to put the birds back in their in 1 week.

This is what I feed them. (keep in mind i'm not a professional budgie breeder, I started a few years ago when I found a wounded stray budgie in the back yard and I immediatley grew attached to him).

    - Budgie seed - I get my budgie seed from the flea markets in 20 kg bags

    - Silverbeet - I grow this myself (100% organic) They absolutley love this and cannot get enough of it. ( I give them this 2 times a week)

Millet - I buy this from the flea markets and give it to them 2 times a week.

Cuttlefish - It is in their permanantly but they dont seem to be eating/chewing on it.

    Now for my questions...

    1. Is their any other food I should be feeding my budgies/quails/cockatiel? Is that diet enough for them to breed and stay healthy?

    2. I had this liquid that I put into their drink once a month to prevent them from getting mites/lice, Is their any other chemicals/medication I should be giving them to prevent disease?

    3. This question isnt about food/nutrition so feel free not to answer - My avairy is 3 meters wide and about 12 meters long, How many budgies/quails could I fit in their without it being to cramped up. Could I fit 50?

    Thanks for your time

  4. The budgies sleep on the wire and in the nesting boxes i beleive. It is lucern that is on the ground and it is 6 months old so it couldnt possibly have any chemicals in it.

    Thanks

P.S I put rat baits outside the avairy.

  5. My birds were all dead on the floor and the only similarity that I could find is that they all had holes in them. Its hard to explain but I could see the insides of the budgies. I dont know if that is normal though, it looked like somthing could have bitten them. I will get some pictures. I forgot to mention in my first post that i colony breed my budgies, i dont seperate them.

  6. Should I cover the entire avairy with a tarp? They wouldnt get any sunlight then... Ill put the dove in its own cage just incase ( i would let it go but it cannot fly and butcher birds would kill it) Hopefully if i do that i can put the birds back in the avairy tomorow. Thanks for the help

  7. How would I go about getting rid of the disease in the avairy and preventing new diseases appearing. Should I cover the entire avairy with a tarp? My only concern is that they would get no sunlight. Thanks

  8. It isnt all about grass clippings. There is the issue of quarantining new birds. A lot of wild caught birds carry diseases like psittacosis and others. The bird you caught and put in the aviary could have been a carrier.

The ring neck dove has been in my aviary for 3 months, If it was going to give a disease to my other birds, wouldnt it have done so already?

    Thanks for the posts.

  9. Hello all

I've recently registered as a member on this site and I have a few questions.

My avairy is an old chook pen that I rebuilt to make it more suitable for budgies. It is about 10 meters by 3 meters and half of it is covered by a tin roof and half is out in the open. I have 39 budgies, 8 quails, 1 ring neck dove (I found him outside my aviary he had a broken wing and couldnt fly so I put him in my aviary) and 2 cockatiels.

Yesterday I went up to feed and give my birds water and I am sad to say that I found 17 budgies and 1 cockatiel dead on the ground...

I Put in some grass clippings a day earlier for the quails and I beleive that could have killed my birds.

If you need anymore info on the birds I will gladly give it to you. Now for the questions..

    1. My birds are in little cages until I find out what exactly is killing them, Could it be the grass clippings I put in their? I dont know what else it could be. I doubt a snake would kill 18 birds in 1 day...

    2. I want to put some trees or somthing in my aviary but Will my birds just eat them before they get a chance to grow? if not what are some good trees I can buy?

    3. I feed my budgies and cockatiels budgie seed and a few sunflower seeds for the cockatiels, The quails eat all the left over food on the ground and the ringneck dove eats budgie seed aswell (althought it cannot fly). My question is: Is budgie seed good enough for the ringneck dove to eat? I also grow silver beet and feed it to my birds 2 times a week (100% organic)

    4. Do quails need nesting boxes? I was told they will just breed in the logs I Have in my avairy but I wantto make sure.

Well thats about it for the moment.

If this thread needs to be moved by all means move it to where it needs to be.

Thanks very much for your time.

P.S: The budgies are english budgies, I choose these because I beleive they look better than australian budgies as they are bigger.
