We are going away camping for the Easter long weekend, and will be leaving tomorrow night (Thursday) and not coming home until Monday afternoon. Will Bobby be okay by himself for that long? What else could I do??? Any suggestions - I don't have any friends or family close by who could look after him for me....

have you check to see if you can board him in a local pet store or a faculty that boards (exotic)pets?

Eek, you definitely don't want to leave him alone for that long and while boarding might be an okay option, I'd be afraid of diseases being passed along or the staff not knowing enough about birds if it's not a bird-related place. I know of someone who boarded her budgie and it died while she was away because the staff had no clue what they were doing.

How far will you be traveling? Is there no way to take him along with you in a travel cage? You don't want to leave him in the care of just anyone and you definitely don't want to leave him alone.

It's always a good idea to plan for these things far ahead of time. :)

This is a last minute trip that we just planned, that is why it's suddenly come up now! It's about 3 or 4 hours drive. I would love to take him with me, but camping in the outdoors - is it safe??? I do have a travel cage and I think it would be a hoot taking a budgie camping!! My husband thinks I'm being stupid when I suggested it, he thinks it's fine to leave him with heaps of food and water, but I was uncomfortable leaving him home for 2 days, let alone 4... I might take him with me, does anyone think it's a bad idea???

Neighbours who could drop by and check on him?

I only just moved to this house and I don't know the neighbours at all, so I definately don't trust them with my house keys :) (especially the ones to the left, loud cars mess everywhere - don't seem very desirable!)

sounds like your mum is too far away, where are the dogs going? can Bobby go with them? Uless the dogs are off camping with you :)

If the camp place allows dogs (or pets) I think a bird would be fine. have the tent shut while fixing water and such and he can be out in the sun with you. I have heard of others taking a bird camping with them.

I'm off for the weekend too :P I have a bird sitter coming to care for them all. Lucky me.

How am I supposed to be a responsible pet owner when my husband refuses to be... We just had the biggest arguement because he doesn't want to take him, he reckons he will be fine URGH MEN... I don't want to leave him alone I don't feel safe doing so, how would he feel if something happened while we were away :angry::angry:

I personally wouldnt go on the trip if it was me couldnt bear to leave my birds alone even for one night. 4 days is a long time even if he has food and water - what if he poops in his drinking water on the first day - it will be totally contaminated by day 4.

Take him with you - stuff the hubby hehe!

I wouldn't go if it was a choice between going and leaving my budgies on their own for 4 days. That's just me though. I think if your hubby can put up with dogs on a camping trip a budgie wont be anymore hassle. Dad never lets me bring Mickey on hols with us. :)

I have to agree with everyone else on this take the budgie with you, if you dont you will be worrying about him for the whole of your holidays. four days is too long to leave him by himself.

i birdsit myself and it is so good for their owners, as they can go away and not worry about their birds. and if there were any problems with their birds they know i will contact them and take the birds straight to the vets.

Men are very interesting to say the least. I sympathize with you, as my husband would probably have the same view "mentality" but I would just put my foot down and say look. It is NOT like you are going to be taking care of him anyways, I will be so it will NOT be an issue to you. He probably thinks you will cramp his style. But 4 days, you may come home to a sick or dead budgie and you will never forgive yourself.

If you take him though put a LOCK on his cage door, so there are no accidents period, someone opening it, it could fall and spring open, be careful.

i wouldn't take him with you if i was there...are his wings clipped???

if they aren't, i would hesitate before bringing him with you. and i don't know where your going, but would there be wild birds or something like that that could hurt him if your not watching him??? the other thing is, would you be going on long hikes or whatever through the day becuase if you are and you have to leave him at the campsite it might not be safe....

and does he stress out much when you move him???

i don't know, just some things that you might need to take into considerateion before you jump to conclusions, i know there might not be any other way... just thought i might give a word of warning because it would be horrific if you took him with you and something happened to him...sometimes things happen that you have no control over...esspecially when your out in the open :)

He could stay in the car if they are out walking he would be safe there.

I just think there are as many risks by leaving him home alone for 4 whole days.

but watch with the car because it if is even just 60 degrees it can get too hot because of the sun beating into the glass, so make sure you park it accordingly, and crack the window. And I would cover the cage on at least 3 sides for drafts and predators. They may not be able to get in but they can sure scare them on the outside of the car.

isn't there a rule where you never leave an animal in a car for long periods of time, cause they die of heat exhuastion or something???

yeah, i don't know... i just wanted to point out that there are plenty of risks in taking him with you and don't be TOO hasty in your desision.

do you know anybody who lives 5 - 10 mins away from you???

maybe you could leave him at home and ask them to come around once or twice just to feed him, give him water and to make sure hes okay....even offer to pay them a little???

Feel like a trip down to Ballarat for the weekend??? :)
i woulden't take him with u if i was there...are his wings clipped???

If I do end up taking him, I would leave his cage locked up in the tent while we were out, he would only be outside under strict supervision, and always in a locked cage. I would only open the cage for food & water etc when in the tent with all zipped up tight.

I will be asking someone I know tomorrow if she wouldn't mind looking after him for me, otherwise HE WILL be coming along...

He doesn't stress out when we move, he quite likes the car actually!!

For us in the United States it differs from state to state, in Florida because it is so HOT at times it is completely illegal here in Ohio it is not.

:ausb: My avian vet boards, maybe yours does too or if not, maybe somebody who works there would be able to take Bobby for the weekend. It is far too long too leave him without fresh water, food and companionship and I would really worry about the car thing and taking him along. Good Luck :dbb1:
