Yesterday was the BRASEA auction at Revesby in NSW. This is an annual event that has birds up for auction from mainly NSW breeders, but also some breeders from Interstate such as Harro from ACT, Ken Dunk from Qld and a few others.

 

Always a large auction, there were 365 birds registered for auction and prices rnaged from $10 upto about $750.

 

John Hewitts DF Spangles and Albinos seemed to be the most popular item, with his success as the national last year helping to push his prices up.

 

There were some very good birds there and no one who purchased a bird could have been disappointed.

 

I went looking for a few good birds, but was not going to spend hundreds on anyone bird. The only bird that I bid anything over $200 was a Geoff and Ann Hand Cinnamon Grey Opaline Hen 2010 bird that went for $300, and a dommie pied version that went for $525. I prefered the $300 bird, but it was too expensive for me.

 

I bought a number of birds, with quite a few cinnamon birds I noticed. A few from Geoff and Ann Hand, a Hewitt, a few from Cliff Cameron, a Gregoriou, (Gregoriou and Hewitt are based on Scoble Bloodlines and I already have a few from Hewitt and Gregoriou) and a nice Troy Holmes (SA) Hen. I have some pics so I will write where they are from as well as their details.

So all up it was a long day, especially for the birds. The birds were a bit tired and stressed so the shots are not the best. I will get better shots in the future, but overall there were some nice birds there. Will these birds dominate my breeding program? No. They are stock birds, but the blue and cinnamon are needed in my aviary, so we will see where this goes.

 

I know the idea of keeping bloodlines together, and I am mainly doing that.

You are right - I put the pics in wrong in my mad haste to start this thread in the five spare minutes i had today.

okay, I think that is right now.

 

As for the turn out, it looked a little down, however I was speaking to a few people from the ACT who had made the trip up.

 

One thing I really found disappointing was that the breeders of some birds were there and when their bird came up for auction, they bid on the their own bird. If they win, it costs them nothing, and they can really push up the bid of their bird in a way that I personally think is unfair. A friend of mine stated that once he sees a person bid on their own bird, he will not bid on any bird of theirs. I agree with that. That is a rule I think that needs to be changed. Have the owner put in a bid if they want, but only one bid per bird. Not every second bid. If they want to keep their birds and sell them at a certain price, do not put them in an auction that has a reserve of $10.

John's DF and Troy's Spangle I looooove! Troy has some amazing birds - he had a YF Sky Violet spangle that I really wanted but it went waaay out of my price range (this was last year when I got my DF hen). Troy has shown me a few of his birds and they are wow!

 

Shame I missed the Auction this time - oh well there will be others!

That is the way the vender gets there reserve price at an unreserved Auction.

They bid on the birds or organise,for someone else to do the bidding.

How do you think,that some birds go for so high prices.They have some one running them

up to the price they want.

I saw the same in Melbourne a few years back. it was just 1 top breeders selling his birds. There was a guy who sat at the front, and pushed every single bird to beyond $100. I was only an observer but couldn't help wondering, why not just start the bidding at $100. Probably wouldn't have sold as many as people tend to get into a bidding frenzy. ( Me included, EBAY addict ) . Just seemed pointless to begin bidding at $20 when you knew that you wouldn't get it for under $100.

In most auctions its accepted practice that a seller will bid his bird up to his reserve price only and not beyond. Some do not follow those rules.

A good Auctioneer would know that & would have it at $100 in very quick time & it

would draw the bidders in,you have to work the punters & keep them on there toes.

I have been to some drawn out Budgie Auctions & have left,because the the Auctioneer,

is hopeless .
