Gloria

I went out this morning to find her wandering around the bottom of the cage.

I contemplated putting her back in the nest until I saw Pie feed her.

She's quite content. She walks around chewing everything she can get her beak on.

So I set up a bomb shelter and she happily chewed it.

The bomb shelter is just half of a tissue box.

11_5-1.jpg

Leela

She's starting to get her colour through now.

11_2-2.jpg

Ace

She seems to have really dark pins....or its just me.

11_3-2.jpg

Potato

My fluffy fat boy :D

11_4-2.jpg

What surprises me is that none of them seem to be YF.

I'm a bit disappointed because I really like Pie's yellow face and was hoping to get more like it.

But I guess is just like roulette, so maybe next round I'll get some :)

Put her back just the same. Only leave them out if fully feathered. She isnt yet so put her back :)

I'll do that then.

I wasn't sure, but I figured if I posted it someone would tell me :)

Thats interesting GB.

I asked a member at the meeting last night who did a talk about YF blue birds.

He said you can usually tell if they are YF from about 10 days old.

But if yours didn't come out till the first moult then I'll hold onto them and see what happens :)

I also wanted to ask for opinions on these babies when it comes to show quality.

Is there anything in particular you can look out for in young chicks when it comes to features?

More pictures :)

Gloria

She doesn't want to sit anymore.

She also likes to blow her head when calling for food

11_1-3.jpg

Leela

Messy beak much...

11_2-3.jpg

Ace

I had to include that wing lol I love her quirk.

I'm actually contemplating changing her name to Angel, as Ace was picked as a unisex name.

Checked the cage and gloria had fallen out again.

But she still has a few naked spots so I put her back in the nest.

I proceeded to pick up and check the other chicks when i heard the chicks being fed.

Well doormat and pie both wait outside the nest until I'm finished.

So I opened it up and Ace was being fed by Gloria.

I thought it was a tad strange, but cute.

Is it abnormal that she is doing this? She'll be five weeks old on Tuesday.

I figured it could just be that she's mimicking mum and dad.

it is so cute to see the other chicks feeding. This is normal - so many little things that once you have seen it a while you forget to mention that it happens.

I'm sure you will see Gloria out and about often now that she has taken the step.

Lovely chicks Maddy, and I love them names.

I leave my chicks with parents or one parent as long as possible, until they are totally eating

on there own and some times they stay there until 7 to 8 weeks. As long as the parents are good

parents and are not aggressive towards the young.

I have some parents that you couldn't do that with but the most of them do.

I also agree with kaz and GB, I keep putting mine back and back and back lol

Update.

This is the longest I've gone without making one...mostly because they are getting to the stage where I find the changes are more subtle everyday.

Gloria

No more naked spots.

14-3-11_1.jpg

I just thought this was an excellent photo.

I find her quite beautiful :)

14-3-11_2.jpg

Leela

She's at the stage that Gloria was at a week ago...where she is on constant reverse trying to escape.

14-3-11_3.jpg

Ace

14-3-11_4.jpg

Potato

He has really vibrant tail feathers coming in.

They look almost violet.

Actually I had two pictures of her. The other one was with her wings out...but it was blurry :P

I try and get pictures of her sitting normally like this, but its a rare occurrence.

Maybe she's starting to grow out of it

No pictures today but an update and an enquiry.

Gloria is fully feather and she takes every opportunity to get out of the nest. Even when I open the lid she hops on the side and preens while I check her siblings.

But even though I found her on the floor of the cage nearly every time I checked, I'd put her back in the nest and she knew it, and would often not even wait for me to put her in, jumping in herself.

Today I did the same. Picked her up and opened the nest and expected her to jump. Instead she turned her back to it. I thought this as strange but put her in the nest anyway (she was reluctant to go)

Thats when I noticed Doormat screaming and Gloria doing the same.

Well, it seems doormat has gotten a head start and laid another egg. Silly hen. Potato is no where near fledged, but she's ready to go another round.

But I figured that Gloria has already been kicked out which was why she was reluctant to go back in.

Now I have to ask, what do I do?

If potato was older and ready to fledge I may of checked on Doormat again to see if she was ready for another round, but being the ages they are I am deciding against it.

Do I take doormat out and leave pie in there with them? Or do I transfer Pie and the babies elsewhere?

Its not an urgent matter as I haven't seen any aggressive behaviour coming from mum, but its something I need to take action on so that I don't get a nest full of eggs. Though its an exciting concept of having more chicks...I have a lot more hens to do that with :P

I will most likely take photos on Monday...as I'm working all day tomorrow.

you can remove the eggs and leave them altogether if doormat isn't aggressive towards the chicks. otherwise remove her and leave Dad to raise them.

You can also put a shelter on the cage floor like a small ice-cream container with one side cut out, I leave the lid on and turn it up side down and add seed as for bedding.

Dad will continue to feed the chicks, and it leaves the hen in peace to lay again in the nesting box.

I have half a tissue box on the bottom of the cage just in case, but like I said she's not being aggressive.

The thing is Taboo, I don't want her to lay again. I feel she's not in top condition to have another round.

Thanks nerwen. Hopefully she won't lay any more eggs but if she does do I just keep removing them?

Terrible, sad, disappointing news.

I went out to the aviary this morning and was greeted by this:

22-3-11_1.jpg

and Gloria's broken bloody body on the bottom of the cage.

The way she looked....I never thought birds could be that malicious.

I've been holding back tears.

I loved Gloria, she was my favourite.

She was sitting on the perch next to Dad and exploring the seed.

Like I said, there were no signs of aggression before this.

I saw Doormat chase her off the perch every now and then, but it wasn't viciously. Just a bit of a bump...no pecking whatsoever.

I feel like it was my fault.

But what I've learned from this is that half tissue boxes cannot hold back a desperate mother like I was informed.

So there was a frantic baby and dad move this morning to an empty cage.

22-3-11_5.jpg

And then there were 3

Hi Maddy,

Don't beat yourself up over this you can't predict what any hen will do unless you have a breeding history, next time you will be better prepared for what she might do.

Most pairs are quite happy to have their young stay until weaned.

Cheers Jenny

yes Maddy, this was a disaster - you did everything you could to prevent it (i myself have used a tissue box as a save spot for babies.

It is a terrible thing to lose a baby, and my heart goes out to you. Potato is looking older now and should be fine with dad in the cage. Watch him as well he may act a little crazy trying to moult his offspring so i would still add a box for them on the bottom of the cage.

hugs to you again. if you write down records record this for next time the hen has a round and remove her hen possible.

maddy im so sorry to hear this

but i wonder why did you remove dad and bubbys

please if its not been more than 12 hours put dad n bubbys back in nest box and remove mum

the dad will feed better from the nest and chicks will call for food more than huddled on floor

mum should have been taken as soon as the egg was layed and put in a separate resting cage in-till a few weeks rest and supervision to see all eggs layed

im really sorry mate for your disheartened feeling
