The hen is sitting on 5 eggs and i did not want her to have to raise them by herself so i thought i would try to give her a new male, one i have bred with before who is a great father. She accept him which is really great and he bonded with her very quickly and is feeding her and going in the nestbox and sitting on the eggs. I hope he continues taking on a fatherly role even though the babies will not be his. Link to comment

Keep us updated on how that works out. I would never have tried that myself, seems simpler to just leave the hen to raise the chicks which she is quite capable of doing on her own. Seems to me that introducing a new male at this stage would be more risk than its worth, but i would love to see good things happen! Let us know how it works out! Link to comment

She is only just started laying the eggs so she still has 12 days before the first egg is due to hatch which hopefully gives plenty of time for the pair to develop a bond. Link to comment

Kelani ( who i got from you) is the hen and Konani was a beautiful cobalt normal i bought only 4 months ago was the male who flew away. So far i have 3 fertile eggs, it is too early to candle the other 2. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that what i am trying will work, the male has raised 3 clutches before so he is experienced. Usually when a new bird is introduced to a breeder cage with a hen in the nest, she would attack the "intruder" and kill him. You were so lucky it went the other way. Sometimes too, it can cause the hen to abandon the eggs and start over with the new male. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you :bump: Link to comment

Last night a mouse got into the breeding cabinet and ate one of the eggs and cracked the shell of 2 others. The membranes were not broken on the eggs so i have put water based wood glue on the cracks and i hope they will be okay. i thought i had got rid of my mouse problem but it looks like they are still getting in. Perhaps put tin 2 -3 feet up all the sides of your aviary and i'd like to see the little buggers try get in then. You set up is awesome! Link to comment

I am not sure if it was mice now because she had 4 eggs early this morning and i have just gone to feed them and she has 2 eggs now. Mice do not usually come around in the day so maybe the new male is eating them. i do not think my idea has work, i think i will remove the male and hope she will be okay by herself. I have had a hen rear 3 chicks by herself, when I did't have a foster to give them to. The wire squares will be ??. 1.2mm would be the wire thinckness. Link to comment

Your wire is the cause of your mouse problem is for sure. I now use 0.5cm by 0.5cm wire mesh which is mouse proof Edited March 31, 2009 by **Liv** Link to comment

They were fertile when i candled them at 6 days. What could cause this to happen? I am disappointed that it all went wrong with this pair. I lost the male and now i lost the chance to get a baby from him. Link to comment
