You could always feign interest in their puppy to get a sneak peak in their backyard. He's soo cute, I'm moving to a place that lets me get one, what sort is he and where did you get him, etc.

Grrrrrr, If it was any other animal I am sure it would be dealt with now. I guess they just don't see budgies in the same light we do ....

Not really, I find their response is lax regardless of species. And considering this is a dual case with the dog and they still haven't bothered turning up, it makes you wonder if they really do anything at all to help animals.

The sad thing about most animal organizations is that if they have food, water and there are no dead ones they don't do anything but give a warning if that, I have seen it on the animal cop shows on T.V. I really feel for you because you are hopeless to do anything unless your neighbors were more open to suggestion on care of both puppy and birds.

What i just witnessed:

Neighbours placed bird cage out in open on something on the back of a ute in backyard. Probably the first direct sun they've had which is fine EXCEPT today is extremely gusty winds. I knew it was a recipe for disaster as soon as i saw it. 5 minutes later, CRASH. the cage had fallen upside down about 1 metre down. Birds fluttering everywhere, drenched in water from over turned water tray.

I am sickened. They basically came out and turned the cage over (cigarette in mouth, blowing smoke all on birds), had no interest in seeing if the birds were okay or anything.

Those poor poor birds, I am horrified.

They are in for a tough night tonight. Gale force winds, rain and they are totally exposed. I feel helpless watching them suffer.

I know you said they wouldn't listen to you... but maybe knock on their door and offer to take them off their hands... offer them a price and see what they say. That way you have done everything 'legal' to help these poor birds. I also feel for these birds, and regardless of what we think of the owners... these birds need our help...

If i do that they will know I'm looking over their fence. They won't take kindly to that. I'm someone who puts the welfare of animals before any personal concerns so I don't know why I'm standing by watching this happen. I just know there will be repercussions if I say something. I can't risk anything happening to my own pets or my families house. These neighbours frequently have up to 15 men in their back yard. They are middle eastern (I'm not stereotyping) and unfortunately these birds are going to suffer as I am not confident to do anything about it. B)

I would do this too. You can ask if they would sell them to you without talking about what you know of their treatment.

If that is the case then... you need to stop looking. If you aren't able to do anything about it... let it go. You'll only put more stress on yourself. B)

You could always go knock on their door and say that you can hear their birds in their back yard and you are looking at getting a bird do they have any for sale or do they know of a breeder. They can't get upset with you over being able to hear the birds. But as others have said if you have done everything you can think of then you need to walk away from the situation as heart breaking as it sounds.

The back of a ute?? What is going on? How strange. What a sad story. I really feel for you and the birds.

If it's any consolation... at least the birds have each other! Even though they don't have anything else to play with at least they have a companion.

Thanks everyone.

Yes Im glad they have each other, just hope one doesn't die before the other.

Today I was informed that the RSPCA did come last week. You would never have known, nothing has changed. In fact the birds have been moved further into the open than before.

The RSPCA thought the bird's accomodation was suitable. They also thought the dog kept in solitary confinement 24/7 is just fine.

It gives people very little incentive to keep a look out for the welfare of animals.

Most of my experience with the rs*ca is also that they are toothless tigers :) Any actions of your neighbours since might be deliberately trying to antagonise you by flaunting their lack of care of the birds. I am sure they would assume you are the person who told the rs*ca.

The RSCPA believes if there is food, water and no dead animals then it is suitable, I have walked into a number of petshops that I would have closed down but they find sutiable.

oh dear

The birds have been put in direct sunlight for the past hour. No shade and the sun is burning today. I can see them distressed, pacing their perches looking for shade.

The people are also running some noisy generator thing in the backyard and revving cars, the birds are in the middle of all this.

I can't handle this abuse anymore!

What will happen to birds left in the hot sun for hours? Surely its going to do harm?

Linda, there is NOTHING we can do about these birds to help you handle what you are seeing. Either you get the courage to go next door and offer to buy them off your neighbours to free them or you dont. Either you act now or you dont. You havent yet done all you can and maybe now is the time. We cant do anything but you can. :)

I know, I dont expect you to do anything. Just needed to vent sorry..

Also wanted to know whats the worst that can happen to birds that are left in direct sunlight for many hours including in the hottest part of the day. Heatstroke? death?
