Posted January 12, 20187 yr Like Brett, it seems that my birds are taking a long time to breed. I just had a couple where the hen layed 5 eggs. She is a dark green and I have her with a Gray Green. I dont want to breed gray green. So after she layed her eggs and was sitting on them past the 24 day mark, I put a blue normal male in with her. I really want her to breed with a blue. What do you guys think? She was the first one of 3 pairs to breed. I have been feeding the birds high protein mixture and here in Hawaii the weather is mild. How can I get me more interested in breeding?
January 12, 20187 yr In my experience if you change cocks it usually results in the hen leaving her eggs. She can even attack the intruder so keep an eye on her.
January 26, 20187 yr SELECT YOUR PAIR , PUT HEN IN BREEDER CAGE , MINIMUM 3 DAYS BYHERSELF, THEN PUT IN YOUR COCK BIRD REMEMBER AGE CAN BE A FACTOR WHAT I DO IS SELECT COCKS/HENS THAT I WANT TO UTILISE (REMOVE OTHER COCK/HENS BIRDS FROM THE AVIARY/FLIGHT) let them choose their partners, then selectively separate the pairs that you would like- repeat as many times as you require, you will have better success that way if birds freely select their own partner then probabilities of good fertility of eggs is possible
January 26, 20187 yr this is semi selective breeding- let them choose- at first- their own partners, creates breeding instinct/urge, then pair up birds, you should have better success with fertility of eggs
January 27, 20187 yr Author So my hen did go off her eggs. Out of 6 eggs only one was fertile. I tried pairing her with another cock, and that is why I asked the question. Before I read this post, I just put another experienced cock in with her. So I will see how that goes. My other two hens are flirting with their males and the males are feeding them, but she is not looking in the box. I knew these are at least 1 year old.
February 3, 20187 yr when I first started breeding, I used to put the hen in the breeding cabinet (as I have reverted back to - all cabinets in the aviary- good contact with the flock , remember budgies are flock birds) then I would attach another cage to the front of the breeding cabinet with my preferred cock bird- by doing this the hen only has close contact with one male as the cage prevents others from trying to "cut in" but she still can see/hear her friends, give it three four days then introduce them, good luck, worst comes to worst extend the time , remember they will breed when they want to , not because you want them to be patient, good luck
