I have a dog, two cockatiels and nine budgies at present. I've looked at the ferry from Melbourne and it caters to dogs with transport cages so that's great but I don't know about the transport for the birds. Taking them with me for the drive feels right as I'm right there, but if flying would be not only faster but less stress I could arrange to have them brought across that way I think. Just not sure what to do. Does anyone have any experience? Link to comment

The Spirit of Tasmania does take birds but you will need to apply for an import permit from the DPIWE. The permit is free but it takes time to organise. I flew my birds with Qantas freight from Melbourne because it was faster. Link to comment

The main thing with freighting birds is to build good solid transport boxes and to always use direct flights. Link to comment

So what did you do? Catch the same flight? Or have someone else load them up while you meet them on the other side? Link to comment

There was a half hour or so wait for the birds to clear customs at Qantas Frieght (the building labeled Australian Air Express) but that will probably be a bit faster if you are flying on a weekday. Why are you moving to Tasmania? Link to comment

As I'm studying nursing I figure I'll be able to find work in Tassie too so that should work out really well. My Border Collie will love me for all the extra space, I have a few friends who live in Launceston, and it overall just appeals to me. Once I'm done with my current qualification I'm going to save for a while and then take the plunge, but of course my biggest concerns are getting my pets down safely. Link to comment

Everything should be fine, just make sure you apply for an import permit with the DPIWE. Link to comment

At least a week to be safe I would say, but they were pretty quick with me and it was settled within a few days. Link to comment
