Cage Front Building

Recommended Posts

Is there any information on building cage fronts?

I know the process would be easy but I would like to watch some one demonstrate how easy it is.

Depends on the type you are talking about. Here we can buy a flat ready made front in different sizes. Some have a door for breeding cage to fit in / or not if you have box on sides. Or are you talking home made front with bird wire etc.?

Talking about spot welding and straighting stainless wire.

I wanna custom make some. I know what the concept involves but I wanna know every little secret.

so I guess build my mold out of wood to lay out all bars in groves ready for spot weld.

Just gotta work out if I can buy the wire pre cut straight or I might have to build a wire straightener.

Straight wire of a suitable gauge is available at welding supplies in the form of either oxy-acetylene welding rods for mild steel and TIG welding rods for Stainless Steel. If you buy rolls of wire the best way to straighten it is to apply significant tension. You could do this by attaching one end to something solid and the other end to your car and then reversing it. Not too far or you'll stretch it to plastic deformation and possibly break it. Stop the car and let it remain under tension for a while and it should stay straight enough one cut into shorter lengths.

Interesting topic. When I was thinking about making cage fronts for my canary show cages, the local welding supply shop recommended welding rods for the cage bars and silver solder to join them. In the end I bought cages from a man who imported the steel for his cage fronts from the US.

Will be coming back with more information on this.

Once I have my jig setup I will post a youtube video on how to do this.

Considering cage fronts can be bought between $9 and $12 depending on size ....I figure its not worth the hassle

Its worth it to some people as they wanna custom build their breeding cabinets and not be restricted by size of manufactured cage fronts from off-shore manufacturers.

Its would be sad to see hand made cage fronts disappear, as the people that are cage front building in Australia, age is coming up on them and it won't be long before this art does disappear.

Every year Australia is loosing things, that could of been made at home due to off-shore processing plants, doing it cheaper.

What happens in the end is a country with no skills very sad.

I bought a roll of cage wire at bunnings and simply lay sheet over the front of the box and simply cut with a pair of side cutters to the specs I want for that particular cage. 10 meter X 1 meter was abt $30.00. I dont think that I would go to the trouble of soldering my own mesh simply due to the time involved. If you really want to go this rout a roll of mig wire might be the go.

I'm talking about the proper cage fronts.

wire mesh works but I would love access with out a hinged door.

kinda like these.

Oh I see. I have the luxury of just building my cages now, so built around the front sizes.
