I picked this little baby up last week from a pet shop, but I seriously think she's not weaned. Found her today nearly dead in the avairy and when I picked her up all I could feel was her breast bone. She won't eat seed and it looks like her beak isn't right? The bottom half comes up over the top half. I made a mash as best I could from the cockatiel pellets I've got and she's been eating the juices from that and has really perked up. How young could she be? She doesn't seem to fly really yet, and does the baby begging for food head and the bobbing when she eats from my spoon. Is her beak going to be a life long issue?

Terrible picture, will try to get a better one tomorrow. I am just really worried about her. She's just asked for another feed 2 hours after her last one.

Hi she must have been eating something or she wouldn't have lasted a day. I would put her somewhere where food is easy to get to even a layer of food on the floor until she is eating well. You may have to supplement her until her weight improves. She seems to have an undershot beak which may need to be trimmed occasionally, was it like this when you got her if not she may have damaged it somehow in the aviary though it is a common problem in the nest from food compacting in the top beak. Cheers Jenny

She died last night. I didn't think she would need another feed so I went to sleep and lost her. My fault :(

Sorry to hear she died but it's NOT your fault you did what you could. If she was not weaned she should not have been sold to the petshop and you only had her for a week she might not have been well to begin with. Just a heads up for next time you get a new bird, you should quarantine them away from your other birds for 30 days just incase they are carrying any diseases which might not be visable at the time you buy them.

If you only had her for a week she must have been in that condition at pet shop. Some people should not be able to have pet shops. Un -suspecting people pay good mooney for pets only to lose them within a short time, it's disgusting. Don't blame yourself, you realised she had a problem and tried to help her. I'd go back and let the pet shop have a serve for selling a bird like that in the first place. Good luck with any others you get. Not from that shop though !!!!! :(

I'm sorry to hear. I agree robin sometimes I feel like giving them a word or two. That's why I like to buy direct for a breeder then you can see their setup and other budgies conditions too.

Not all pet shops are "bad", but some just don't have a clue and the info they give out is very detrimental to the welfare of the birds, not just Budgies. I have a good local pet shop who buy my surplus birds. I have been in several times, just to check out their knowledge and set up and they really do know about birds, they even breed some of their stock of parrots themselves. Unfortunately I have been in to some that are shockers.

I took her little body back to the pet shop today. The woman who owns it claims that under shot beaks cause no issues. So furious! She didn't want to do anything to help me because they only have a '7 day returns policy'. Told me it was most likely night fright. She wouldn't even let me keep her body to take home and bury. I got offered a new baby, who seems healthy but I will quarantine for longer this time around.

This shop is now on my black list. Our local one is great so will go there. I would love to buy from breeders but can't ever find any.

If you got baby from same shop I'd give it a dose of Ivermectin for a start, that should get rid of any worms etc it may have. Quarantine it as well, is it older than your first chick? I don't think that one was old enough to be sold in the first place. She probably kept the bird so you couldn't take it to anyone who may investigate the shop. Good luck with your new pet. :)

Gumtree usually has budgie breeders.

Funny how she wouldn't let you take a dead budgie home to bury it.

What if you had a child that become attached to the poor little thing and your child wanted to give it a proper burial.

so was you charged for that new budgie?

The new one is older, still a baby though. It's in quarantine, don't have any ivermectin but have given her a small dose of poultry wormer and mite spray. It's a totally healthier happier bird. She didn't charge me for it, but made sure to tell me that she wouldn't be willing to exchange a bird again because it wasn't her fault. I've looked on gum tree a few times but can't ever find anything local to me (armidale NSW).

Here's the close ups of her after she died.

The breeder I got my bird from said to me if the ones I get from here ever die with in 2 weeks, come back and she will give my money back.

But that hasn't happened.
