I think he is asking what is the required time that he should be waiting before pairing his hen with another or the same partner for her second clutch in a row.

Hi F.Panda, my hens will sometimes start to lay second round before all chicks from first round have fledged. You have to watch she doesn't attack last chicks to lay again. Helps to leave Dad in charge of chicks, in cage but outside nest box.(if they are ready to leave nest).

 

If you have paired her to one Cock and raised a clutch and want to swap partners, I'd give her a rest from first clutch then pair her with second Cock to bond etc.if she's still in breeding condition.

Hi. If you want to pair he to another cock. She will already be carrying eggs fertilised by cock N01.

You will have to allow her to lay these, then rest her before pairing to a new partner.....B.J.

okay so what i was trying to say was if i had a pair of budgies and they had eggs how long after the babies have gone can i let the same pair have a clutche. sorry for the confusion

Like Robyn has said they will sometimes start to lay again while the last few chicks are still in the nest.

Most times they will start to lay again at about 10 days after the last chick has left the box.

But keep a eye on the hen for some will attack the chicks if they want to lay again.

I myself at most times will take the box away once the last chick has fledged and replace it when the chicks have gone into the nursery cage.

I do have some pairs that are happy to still rear the last clutch on the cage floor and nest again.

But at the end of the day you know your birds best.

They are all different.

I wouldn't recommend to allow three. In fact, I dont allow a hen to have more than two clutches in a calendar year, because once I let Finnie have two rounds, and then six months later I put her down to breed again, and she almost didn't make it through that clutch. Three clutches in a 9 month period was too much.

Just an aside to this question Finnie. If a pair does have 2-3 rounds in a row. Is there any reduction of quality etc. in later chicks or is it just the toll it takes on parents?

I would think that the main concern would be the toll it takes on the parents. I imagine that if the parents get weak or ill, then that would affect the health of the chicks. But logically, if a hen was getting depleted of her resources, it could lead to less healthy eggs, more DIS, any type of problem that might be due to deficiency of nutrition.

Hey,

I know you have already got your answer but i thought i would ad my bit as well. I haven't been breeding for long but I have one female that has been a great breeder for me, she has had several clutches and she is a really enthusiastic breeder. When she breeds she will throw her babies out of the box ( only a couple of days before they are ready to) and start laying straight away, she usually has 3 clutches before having a brake (6 eggs every clutch about 5 hatch always). She is a great parent and raises her chicks brilliantly.
