Hi guys, i have an aviary which holds 4 birds, 2 scarlett chested parrots and 2 budgies. I am currently setting up for breeding season and i have some questions.

 

when will she come into breeding condition? and what is the brown above the cere area?

 

 

 

 

 

is the boy in good condition by the looks of him? is his cere color correct.?

In my honest opinion, I think the cage is only just big enough, just make sure that as soon as each bird is weaned that they go into a different cage, or you'll have big problems..

thankyou flip-trainer. yes definitely! i am hand rearing the babies and as soon as weaned they will go into another cage. what size do you use?

That size cage is standard for breeding birds in amongst breeders. I am pretty sure Kaz uses that, but turns the front upside down. If you are hand-rearing the chicks (in that last few weeks I assume, as you can't really hand-rear them once weaned) then this cage should be fine. I use it for cockatiels. It depends on the age you are taking them out, they can still be in the box or you may need a brooder. The parents need to be removed once you start hand-feeding.

That cage is perfect breeding cage size.

Hmm I never knew that those sized cages were actually used much by budgie breeders! I've only really heard finch breeders use them ! Well you learn something new every day

The budgie is 10 and 1/2 months old and should be fine when i start to breed. How about the brownness above the cere on the feathers on the first picture? what does that mean? cheers, lochie

The browness above the cere means she has a little respiratory infection. Think of is as having the flu. If it gets worse, then you might need to consider meds or a vet, but at the moment, it is nothing to worry about.

 

As Kaz said, the cage size is fine. Turn the perches so they run across the cage, not length wise. This means the birds will need to fly from perch to perch. Better exercise and budgies require this.

 

Do not breed a budgie until they are 12 months old. Yes, they breed earlier in the wild, but they are a lot smaller, lay smaller eggs, and will breed until they die in teh wild. Self preservation is not a skill budgies possess. Wait until she is old enough.

 

Once you have set up your cage, post some pics on here. People will be willing to offer some advice and help you out with anything else you might need.
