Hi I think with your level of experience. You would be better to wait until the babies are older to work out their sexes.

You wouldn't be able to tell from any written description. Wait till the box needs a clean out, then handle the chicks

for a few minutes every day. This will have them quite tame when they leave the nest. Yours B.J.tongue.gif

PS Let us know what your set up is like.okay!

Hi Funky Sorry forgot to answer your question about mating, Bro to Sis. Not to be recommended

Unless its part of a breeding plan & you would have to know their genetic make up etc.

If your breeding on the colony system. Like in the wild. You need equal number of cocks & hens.

Plus extra nest boxes to avoid fighting & to give the hens choice. Yours B.J.

Based on your past topics

http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=31493&st=0&p=372911entry372911

and the questions you are still asking despite your previous claims to have read the FAQ section

I really dont think you should be trying to breed your budgies just yet.

You are very young and you dont seem to have grasped most of the basics you should know before putting a nestbox on the cage.

Anyone who thinks this is harsh read the previous topics and posts.

That does look like a very nice space for a pair of budgies to breed in. I have a question though. How are you going to be able to check the nest box when there are chicks in it? It looks like it is too far back to reach. One suggestion would be to move it to the front of the cage. You could make a small square door in the upper left part of the front, and you could hang the nest box on the outside of the cage, with the opening facing in the small square door. Then you would be able to look into the back or the top of the nest box to check on the babies.

(Which is something you will need to do at least once per day, preferably twice. To make sure they are fed, and to clean off any poop or food messes that can impair their development. All stuff you should have read in the FAQs by now.)

Just because they mate doesn't mean they have to lay eggs. But since you've given them a box, they will. To stop them from breeding, you can remove the box until you are prepared.

?????

Even if you can reach it, you still have to be able to look inside of it without moving it. Where it is located in this photo, I don't see any way that you can look inside.

It's just something to consider. Have you read about care of chicks in the nest yet?

Well, when you are doing your twice daily checks in the box, at first you just check each chick over quick and then put it back. Once their eyes are open, you can take more time with checking them, and cuddle them and talk to them a little each time. The older they get, the more time you play with them during the daily checks. This will at least get them used to the fact that you are handling them. It won't necessarily tame them, but I have noticed that some of them are more interested in me than others. Some are quite curious to look me in the face and get to know me.

The harder part is when they fledge, because once they come out of the box, they are harder to catch. In fact, during the week-to two weeks that I try to let them stay with their parents, if the parents are not threatening them, I completely stop trying to handle them at all, because it causes too much disturbance chasing them around in the breeding cage. But once you know the chicks can eat fully on their own and it is safe to remove them from the parents, then you put them into a kindie cage. This cage should be in your main living area, so they can get used to household activity and human presence. It will be easier to catch them and play with them on a daily basis from this cage. Hopefully they won't have lost the head start they had before the two weeks off.

If at this stage, I have some that are too flighty and hard to work with, then I give those ones a feather clip. But basically from then on, you work on their taming just like any other bird.

Hello I think you would be better off letting the parents rear the chicks. When their all hatched you can take the

oldest chick & hold it for a few minutes twice a day every day. As the next chick gets a bit older you can take

that one out too & so on until you have them all out to play with you for a few min. By the time they leave the nest

they will be very tame ready for you to follow one of the posts on taming & training. Yours B.J.

any attempts to remove and feed these babies at earlier than 14 days will result in death!!!! Babie have to be fed 3 to 4 hourly at 7-14 days!!! YOU need a LOT OF time+dedication! Let the parents raise them till they are pin feathered, then you can touch them and remove them for box 15minutes at a time to tame!
