I am only new at this... what do you put on the base of the nesting boxes to give the babies something to grip to so they don't end up with splayed legs

wood shavings - you can get from a pet shop in bags normally with rabbits or guinea pigs on them.

others use oats

Hi there, some baby budgies, like all other creatures . Though its more prevalent in the

domesticated types can be born with Skeletal Dysplasia, (not sure of spelling) ie. Splayed legs.

A congenital birth defect causing to weakness in the hip joints. Providing any type extra bedding ect.

will have no effect on the outcome I have read of some birds being cured by binding the legs

together with tape, but I have never seen proof that it works. Sawdust is handy for keeping the

nest box dry. If you do get S, D, mate the parents to different partners..... Yourslaugh.gif B. J.

What's a wooden concave ?

Hi Its a wooden false bottom in the nest box with a saucer shape cut-out to stop the eggs rolling about.

From the questions your asking do you think your ready to start breeding? Suggest you read a few posts

on breeding budgies before you start. okay. Yours laugh.gif B. J.

I use Care Fresh bedding I bought Aspen bedding after being told by a long time breeder here in the U.S. it was the best to use Well I will never use it or any other form of "wood Chips" again.

I had used Care Fresh Bedding (Which is recycled paper) For 2 1/2 yrs before using Aspen chips/bedding. Never had any problems with the care fresh. First breeding using Aspen I had a high rate of dead in shell eggs, Babies dying a day or 2 after hatching.. My Green Cheek conure Male got an Irritated swelled eye from kicking the bedding and it hit him in the eye scratching his eye which swelled up and was extremely irritated. I never had that problem with care fresh.

The dead in shells and babies dying were from pairs that I've bred in the past(using care fresh) and Never had these problems and if I had babies die at a day or 2 old it was once in a while while I used care fresh, When i was using Aspen it was happening A lot.

when I buy my leg bands I buy 25 at a time and usually by the middle of the season I'm ordering another 25 and usually only have maybe 5 to 8 of the second set of 25 left over. The entire season I used Aspen Bedding I didn't even use up all my first 25 leg bands for my budgies I've always ran out at least my 1st set of bands in the past while using care fresh

so all those problems was enough for me to go back to using Care fresh and I haven't had a problem since I went back to it Last breeding season.

The females are good for kicking the bedding out while they are laying eggs but once the babies hatch they leave it alone (they're too busy to kick it out) so If they kick it all out while laying eggs I just leave it out once babies start hatching I put it back in, and I make it at least 1" thick then I push it down before putting babies/eggs back in so it's a bit flattened out. The female will fix it up her way even with babies but this usually just consists of her making a "hole" (you can't see the bottom of the nest box though) for the eggs and babies to sit in and the bedding is all around them it sort of like a blanket I guess is a way to say it.

Well we didn't think they would start breeding so quickly, Hubby only built the aviary 3/4 mnths ago, got some birds... next thing you know we had a couple of babies......one poor little bub, we took to the Vet his little legs were just straight , the Vet said his legs were fused ... so the best to do was put him to sleep... poor little thing, now we have one his aren't to bad , hopefully they will get better. I didn't think that they would breed that quickly......We weren't really worried if they did our not. looks like they are trying again....so if anyone has a suggestion on a good book .. I would be most appreciative....rolleyes.gif

Usually splayed leg has to be caught very early on to be fixed at home, Or even by a vet (it can be done sometimes But its expensive and stressful on the bird) usually to be able to fix the splayed leg it needs to be caught before 2 weeks old and then one of the "home remedies" are done either by "taping" the legs where they're supposed to be, another is putting a leg band on both legs and using yarn or twine to "tie" them together and "set" the legs back where they're supposed to be, Another is using a foam Make up sponge- Same concept as the other 2,

I've only done the make up sponge and it worked Perfectly! after the sponge was on for 2 weeks you could not tell the bird ever had a leg problem to begin with. There is also the slight chance of just adding more proper bedding that it will fix on its own (granted it's not a sever case) I've done this once and it worked very well. but I caught the splayed leg Just as it was starting so I added just another handful of fresh bedding and by the time the baby was ready to be pulled the only small issue he had left was his foot turned out just a tiny bit, it was not easily noticed though. he perched, walked, landed, climbed just fine. but occasionally when he was standing facing you You could tell it slightly pointed outwards instead of facing forward like him and the other foot.

but if the 1st one's legs were fused it sounds like its most likely too late for this one too Because after their bones Finish growing its not able to be fixed at home and usually not by a vet at this stage either.

Well we didn't think they would start breeding so quickly

If you put nestboxes in the aviary that was all the incentive they needed. No nestboxes and it wouldnt have happened. Make sure that any birds in the aviary where nestboxes are are over 12 months of age or either find another place for the underaged ones to be or dont have nestboxes in the aviary.

read this http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=28294&hl= and all the links in that article and you may well want to rethink colony breeding.

CARE FRESH is not available in australia.

You need a concave in the nestbox and if you want to add some extra nesting materials use either flakey bran or dry rolled oats ( porridge oats ) ....both edible and both not dangerous in any way at all.

Good to know. Many thanks from all of us for the link supplied. :)

I buy a 40 kilo bag of flakey bran from the stock feed places for about $18 so that last me a very long time and is cheap and edible and safe.

The warn thing is for those bad bad forum members who need to be told off by staff on more than one occasion...repeatedly bad behaviour equates to warnings and eventually banning from the forum...the only one who can see their warning percentages is the member themselves and staff not other members.
