I have very good dominant pied hen who I was looking forward to using. She was one of those who has heaps of feather and is cock-headed and going by my past experiences with these hens they rarely breed.

Cutting a long story short I paired her up and she began to lay all appeared to be going well and her eggs were filled. She did for an unknown reason stop sitting and began to lay on the floor.

All her eggs addled but she continued to lay. In the eggs that she laid on the floor I could see that the shells were getting thinner and more abrasive. I busted the pair up and popped her in a holding cage. A day or so later she prolapsed. I popped it back in and she seemed to be okay. That was about three months ago.

She is now in exceellent condition and I caught her up and inspected her vent area. I was surprised to see that there was no swelling and all appeared very nice and healthy down there.

I have no intention of trying to use her again this season.

My question is has anyone had direct experience of having a hen recover and breed after a prolapse?

Edit: She is a 2011 hen born last October.

Yes I did! The Grey hen that was Red rung. She prolapsed when she was in with my Super Albino ... well I believe she did - there was blood all over the perch. She went into a hospital cage and made a remarkable recovery. The egg she popped out was very coarse and pitted and obviously scraped her innards on the way out.

I then put her in with Magic and she laid just one egg in the nest box so she ended up raising 3 foster chicks.

Then she moved into the Baby aviary with Magic and a week or so afterwards I noted an egg under the perches ... I assume it was hers 'cause th eldest chick was only about 6 weeks old.

I have had hens recover from prolapses and not ever be able to lay again...I have tried. I guess it depends on the severity and the damage done .....

i have had birds prolapse and after a year rest no shorter re used and two to five eggs layed then re prolapse and not usable or fixable so in my opinion unless you want to get one round and possibly only one egg from them i wouldnt waste time

so i personally would just want to let you know

you cant sell her unless to pet shop

as you would know and

you cant use her and expect her to produce unless at least two years rest but you can wait one year and knowingly know she most probably will re prolapse and need putting down

choice is yours she will live normal healthy life as a pet if no nest box around

Thanks all, interesting to know that it is possible though it sounds likely to recur. Will weigh it up next season.

No worries, I am happy if she didn't

Maybe I'll get some chicks out of her yet ... or else she will be a valuable foster mum. :)
