Oh Yuck. sad.gif

What's brought this on? Weather? Carrier birds? New birds?

What are you doing about it re meds-wise/treatment?

Well it is entirely my fault , No new birds for over 18 months.

I believe since I had it the first time there is a higher chance of getting it again, its funny how you can breed birds for over 15 years or more and never had a disease like this, until its brought into your aviary by an outcross.

Last monday it was really hot here, thunderstorm Monday night , hot and humid than all week, on night was 20 degrees over night. This is what triggered the bug.

Unfortunately I was very busy with work and not on the ball .

Hopefully once you medicate the losses will cease............I know when I had it in my aviaries years ago they went down like a ton of bricks...I caged them all up with warm lamps and coccivet in the water............I lost 35 before meds and none after the meds ...

Best of luck Matt.

I know a lot of breeders who will medicate with coccivet as a course of action when ANY water or damp gets into the aviaries.

Thanks , My fingers are crossed.

I have 7 bad ones up in the house , all got crop feed with meds and food twice today

Caught up every aviary bird and assessed each one today , Some looked good went into a separate flight . this flight was cleaned sprayed and garden lime put all over the floor. Baycox in water.

Others that looked a bit off , signs of dropping changes and stained vent feathers went into a different flight that was cleaned and sprayed and garden lime put over the floor. Baycox in water.

Then the last 12 just dont look right to me , so they were plucked slightly, put into a nappy cage with a fall through bottom for the droppings and Baycox in water.

Thing is here , I have 17 pairs in cabinets so they are fine. But it seems to have mainly hit the last lot of young purple ringers.

Coccidiosis is residual in the ground right? I got a pup with it once and had to bleach the entire backyard to kill it finally!

Good idea about the flame. I use one of those flame guns in my aviary for spiders, feathers etc and sometimes the concrete floor too. A good investment that flame gun.

What a good idea Kaz. I have corregated type roof iron and channels filled with rolled wire to stop escapes. These fill up with spider web feathers etc. a flame gun could be great for ridding aviary of potential bugs.

I think I may have some cropping up as well, not serious like you though. I have heard lemon will keep it at bay? does anyone know if it is all citrus fruits (eg. orange) , or just lemon?

No I think that is for Megabacteria. I know many breeders give their birds lemons but it is the acid content that counts and some oranges have more than others, don't they? I would have thought bitter oranges were best - though I'm only speculating.

Matt, how is it going today?

So is garden lime safe to spread out on top of cement floors in aviaries, won't hurt the birds.

Kaz where do you get those flame burners from, do you have a picture of one for me please. I have double wire on the bottom half of aviary and a build up of feathers so I reckon the flame burner would go down well here.

Yes, garden lime NOT builder's lime. We put about an inch thick onto the pavers before covering it with sand and it protects against bacteria growth. Best thing we ever did and never had any problems with a Cocci outbreak - touch wood.

I'm not sure if it safe for the birds to eat though - especially those stupid young ones that eat everything in sight to excess before they settle down ...

Not citrus for cocci ....that is supposed to keep megabacteria at bay

RENEE/KAZ/SPLAT Gas burners their are a couple of types one that takes a butane gas cannister cheapest one available was about $39 plus cannister got from Bunnings dont know if they still have them there is also one available that fits on to a gas bottle either 3kg or 8.5kg (the BBQ type) range in price from $100 to $300 all depends where u get it from. If gas is not your cup of tea try a heat gun (electric) some burn up to 300 deg and do the same job and probably are safer to use Lime will in no way hurt the birds you will find most calcium blocks contain 30% lime hope this helps TAZ D

Hi Renee, Lost one more today, 2 more dont look good, Problem is they have lost alot of weight and who knows what internal organs are damaged, But not giving up. All birds in aviary seem okay for now , all got millet sprays to make sure they are eating and are all now on a course of antibiotics to hold any secondary infections at bay . It was Hot here today and humid tonight, very still and im right on the coast , so all birds would have got a good dose of meds today.

On the flip side 3 chicks hatched today .

Garden lime is basically calcium carbonate depending on what and where you buy , so safe to use . It must be the white fluffy powder type, I buy Yates garden lime.

Brickies lime or Hydrated lime is garden lime heated to an extreme temperature which changes the molicular structure of the lime , so dont use this for the birds.

Fortitude my friend. 2 losses in 2 days is a good ratio - we know how devastating Cocci can be.

You know it looks like you may have caught it just in time before it developed into a mega-disaster.

And congratulations on the chickies! smile.gif

As for the internal damage ... I'd worry about that a little later when you are through the woods.

This is the industry that i work in ,processing limestone. The type i use in my aviary floor is called "abgrit " aproximately the same grade as sand & also " selgrit " aproximately 4m in size.I spread the abgrit all over the floor of the flights then on top of that i sprinkle the selgrit, the birds love it.It also makes it a lot easier to clean up the floors later. Both these products are as Matt said 100% calcium carbonate ,the white fluffy powder type is the exact same product as >abgrit and selgrit < it's just that it has simply been milled to a more finer product.
