Hi quick question, I was in a pet store today buying supplies, when I noticed most of the baby budgies had Orange rings. They only looked young under 6months.

Is Orange a new colour or is it called gold but looks abit Orange?

Gold rings were issued on Sept 1st too so they can be anywhere between 2 months and younger........they are babies. Most show breeders dont sell this young.

Yeah. Are they young 'cause the Pet Shop says they are? I would check the date on the ring if I were you. wink.gif

In fact they could be adult Pet Shop birds masquerading as young show budgies laugh.gif

Either way you have to ask yourself why a breeder would be shipping his birds down to the pet shop before their first moult. Just does not make sense.

I think more information is required.

I don't think it was ever stated that these budgies in the pet shop were show budgies. In fact I bet they were pet types and they were rung not to show but more so age can be known.

I got some gold ringers ready for the pet shop..

Was bred from a pair of feeders, and I can definitely tell that they wont make the grade.

I have just started selling the cock birds too on Gumtree with free delivery to my local area, that way they don't come to my place. Sold one for $40 today which is a lot more than I would get for it after it has eaten 8-12 months worth of seed. If they show a little bit I will keep them and let them moult out, if they are not good enough they go.

I always put down pretty birds for feeders and if I don't need them to be feeders I let them raise a round and flog the chicks for seed money.

They were very young. Full black eyes, stripes still on their head right down to their cede, plus they were very small.

I believe they are just pet type I was just curious about the ring and if it was the gold, like I said it just looked very Orange.

I was actually happy with the pet store they told me they were only 6-8weeks which looked to be right and they said they were only pet quality. I'm glad they seem to be telling the truth. The bird were also being kept in good conditions :-)

Do they know anything about sexing?

Many just say blue for boys pink for girls. A younger budgies cere is not blue and most are pink purple for boys and girls have a white ring around the nostril.

I have only found one petshop that actually sex budgies right.

With my rotten year this year loosing over ninety chicks I don't even have any chicks to cull for seed, sad. I always put down some feeders for crappy birds , so I can flog them for seed money but not this year, maybe a couple over all.

Seems I only have about 40 babies I am keeping them to see how they moult out because most of my birds are late bloomers.
