Hello,

could someone please give me some advice about the correct/easy way to give a budgie antibiotics via a syringe. He is on Baytril following bleeding from a broken wing and as he is a wild, rescued budgie I would like to do it in the quickest and safest way so as not to stress him out too much.

Thank you and cheers for now,

Best and easiest way is by crop tube and in that way its straight into the crop and no chance of aspirating. But to crop feed food or meds you need to be shown how the first time or two.

A budgie being caught and held often is breathing hard at the time, and these times if you dont allow the bird to settle down anything given by beak ( especially liquids ) will be breathed or taken into the lungs ( aspirated ) ...........

Hi Kaz and thank you for that info. I understand entirely and am now even more scared to do it!!!! The poor little thing is really not ready to be handled daily.

Unfortunately I do not have a crop tube or anyone to show me how to do it. I am really trying to do the best for this budgie that I can as he is really lovely and is settling beautifully, except for when he is handled.

The vet said to keep up the antibiotics for ten days and we are now on day 7 and he seems quite fit (other than his wing obviously) and well. Is it worth stopping the antibiotics as he has had a weeks worth?? I am worried that the stress might do more damage than handling him and providing the antiobiotics - does that make sense or sound completely silly??

Cheers for now,

PS I can understand how people become budgie addicts
