I have a pair of Budgerigar which have 3 young

The youngest of the 3 is still in the nest and still being fed.

The 2 eldest are out as the mum doesnt want them in there and attacks them or kicks them out.

The problem is that dad is not feeding the ones out of the box.

They are on the floor and i have placed a little cover there in case so they can hide if need be.

I am also worried this hen might attack the other chick which only has half his feathers so far.

The other 2 are nearly there but still have at least a week before i think they can crack seed.

I really need help as these look like cracking birds for me as a novice and i dont want to lose them,.

I was thinking of trying to hand rear them or crop feed them. (first time ever doing it)

Any help would be so appreciated.

They are trying to crack seed but not succeeding yet.

Regards

John

Are you sure the mother is kicking them out?,your nest boxes may be to shallow & maybe they are getting out of the nest box on there own, mine are 11 inches deep ,when mine exit they are already cracking seed as i am continually replacing the panorama and french white millet sprays while they are in the nest box. That said,i assume you cannot foster the chicks anywhere else? if possible foster them to other nests.I make sure i never have this dilema as i always put down pairs in groups of four at a time so i can swap eggs and chicks around.Getting back to your problem & assuming you cannot foster the chicks i would replace the chicks in the original nest and grab a handfull of nesting material and rub it all over the chicks and keep your fingers crossed she doesn't reject them,it's unusual for a hen to reject a chick or chick's,ive never had it happen to me.Another alternative would be to contact another Hills member ,who is also breeding and take the chicks to there place and place the chicks under one of there pairs, with chicks approximately the same age, after that i am flat out of ideas hope it all works out for you cheers Phill

Hi guys just an update. I crop fed them a few times just to make sure they were okay. I left them at the bottom of the cage with the little cover for them to hide. They seem to be cracking seed a bit now so i am sure by the end of the week they will be out of the parents cage as the hen is eager to lay eggs again.

The mother was attacking them in the nest and biting them on the head, so i took them out and put them on the floor.

They are still young, the 2 youngest ones you can see a bit of there down feathers still. The smallest one still shows the most down.

The oldest one is in my avatar but still begs to the cockbird for food, I suppose This bird could be taken out but i am worried he wont eat.

I am removing this one very soon as i dont want to lose this bird to getting attacked..

You could try removing the hen for the moment. Once she has gone the cock bird may return to feeding as she wont be there to distract him but keep a close watch. You can return the hen once the chicks have fledged.

The hen is ready to lay her first egg any day now.

I will leave them be. The cock bird is still feeding the 2 youngest ones.

More so now that the youngest chick is out of the nest and on the floor of the cabinet.

I have a hiding platform thing for them to hide under.

I will be taking out the 2 oldest ones this weekend. they should be around 42 - 45 days old
