I had a look at that last night and I was surprised at how many 2007 hens were for auction and how many hens had their rings cut off. I guess if they didn't go for to much and you got just one chick it might be worth it but to many things can go wrong with hens especially old hens.

Henry has obviously kept the hens for the reason that they are producers of quality. Many of the hens are very feminine and as such they obviously breed well.

 

Like anything, every auction is a risk. You never know what any bird is going to breed - or IF it is going to breed when you get it to your environment with your feeding regime and your management style.

 

I have broken down the catalogue for extra clarity for everyone to give you all an idea of what is in the auction in the various age groups. There are pictures of the birds in this catalogue so you can have a look at them yourself.

 

There are 8 X 2007 hens.

 

There are 11 X 2008 hens

 

There are 8 X 2009 hens

 

There are 32 X 2010 hens

Total Hens = 59

There are 5 ZX 2007 Cocks

 

THere are 6 X 2008 Cocks

 

THere are 9 X 2009 Cocks

 

THere are 50 X 2010 Cocks

 

Total Cocks = 70

I would say it would be worth the risk if you got a good quality hen that through quality youngsters. Cocks are a different story, they can be older.

A friend went to the Hills auction and he said in his opinion Henry George birds were of top quality, so this auction could be well worth attending but I can't anyway because I work that weekend.

I just love number 1 in the auction yellow face violet from memory. It will go for a fortune I think. But he looks stunning.

I actually prefer feminine hens and yes they do breed better than the male headed looking hens.

Lot 1 is actually a Violet Sky and 4 years old. What considered a fortune for a 4 year cock bird?

There are some very nice birds in the mix.

 

Good hens as well. They are nearly all in good feather so exhibiting what they are. Only 1 GG Cock looks like he is doing it a little tough!!

THere are some really good 2010 birds there.

Lot 1 coming to WA plus 5 others.

 

Never much of a Vic crowd at HG Auctions

 

4 phone bidders with about 20 - 25 birds going back to purchasers in Queensland.

 

Went there with a purpose tp purchase violets and yellowfaces mission accomplished.

Top price was $1700 for a GGrn Cock Bird - 2010

 

2nd TOp was $1600 for a 2009 Spangle Cinn Violet Hen - sister was 3rd in Rocky.

Plenty around the $200 - $400.

 

Thought the quality was good.

 

Got a DF Spangle hen and a good GGrn Cock so reasonably happy.

 

Two 2007 Cocks cracked $1000 - one to NSW the other to QLD.

 

There were a few birds purchased for Vic - many buying 10 plus.

 

You kept many honest Jeffl - good buying!!

I helped with the phone bidding and did so for a bloke in Victoria who bought a few more birds than me and spent more than I did. That kept me very busy.

 

I always feel quite welcome by the club and it is always nice that people come up and say hello.

 

I thought the overall quality was higher this year.

 

I go with the intention of buying birds I need rather than necessarily the best ones. Anyway thats what I tell myself when I run out of money.

 

The guy I was bdding for knows the birds pedigrees and breeding results inside out as did another chap I know who attended.

 

Watching the Eagles lose was the big disappointment as well as trying to arrange to bring the birds home with me. Thanks to Bruce and Judy Wilson for their help. With Australian Air Express times in Perth we are very lucky. They are in the dark ages in Melbourne and I believe Sydney.

Its always nice to get positive feedback when you run an event like that.

 

 

I thought it went pretty smoothly without any major hiccups.

 

Did you have any feedback re the auction either positve or negative - we obviously want to run a better event next time and we can only do that with feedback.

Re H G Auction

 

Just like to say thank you to James Smith who was doing the phone bidding for me on Saturday, I fully appreciated his updates between lots I was bidding on and for his advise . This is the first time I have purchase via phone bidding on stock unseen and fully relying on my reseach on blood lines and the honesty from the person on the other end of the phone.

 

Many will ask why pay 1000 for a 2007 cock , for me it was the case of having a cracking grand daughter to Lot 54 so I beleive it was worth the gamble. As for having only Henry Georges birds in my avairy it was a case of chasing certain birds that matched certain lines which will help continue building quality in my avairy so I have come away from the auction with 4 cocks and 3 hens with prices ranging from 250 and top being 1700 and very happy.

 

I dont show at this stage, for me its a Hobby. I have 30 of Henrys quality birds and just enjoy trying different pairings to improve the quality of what I have and whether its frustating at times or not its still a relaxing hobby for me and may be down the track I will look at the show scene.

 

I would also like to thank Bruce Wilson for the frIendly and helpful manner shown by him during our phone conversations and who is looking after my birds until they are placed on a flight this week which will be very exciting for me as everyone who I have spoken to from the auction who have already had the benefit of seeing the birds have praised them so I cant wait to see them for myself.

 

So to the Dandenong Club congratulations on a very professional team and a very smooth run Auction .

I think at Henrys Auctions you either go for the older proven breeders or fully investigate the bloodlines.

 

Regarding Lot 102 the Grey Green cock who is pictured the catalogue he is a beauty. He is 2010 rung. His sister Lot 96 had good backskull. Both could have been longer but had the thick neck and backskull. Nice birds. She went for $900. However, their sister Lot 17 also 2010 must went for $100. Nobody cant tell me there isnt something for everyone at these auctions!!!!!! Lot 46 their 2007 mother went for $350. She looked a bit tired but you could see where the quality came from. She is down from the Hercules line which is much sort after.

 

The Light Green cock 2008 Lot 4 was purchased by a chap who k nows what he is on about. This went for $1100. Also from the Hercules line.

 

I hope I got those prices right as I was very busy yesterday!

You were close re Lot 17 mate - I got her for a steel at $200. She may not have had the impact of the others, esp. Lot 102 but used correctly I think she will do the job!!

 

Thanks for the comments guys - I will make sure that it gets back to the Club and Henry - ultimately he is our customer and we analyse the results of each and every auction we do for him to try and improve on the previous one.

 

 

We are working on some improvements for next years that should make it an exceptional experience for everyone!!

It looks like you guys had a lot of good quality birds at that auction. Glade your all happy with your purchases.

We had our BRASEA auction on the weekend and we only had 10 Henry George birds there and some went for as little as $70 to $100.

And from memory his best sold for $590. Bob Smiths birds seem to get top dollar up here and they sold for the most coin.
