Hello Everyone,

I am looking to purchase up to three pairs of Show Budgies in the Northern Rivers, Gold Coast or Brisbane area.

Up to 12 months of age and club rung. Prefer Normals or Spangled, however willing look at most varieties. I am budding bird fancier just starting out. I have six breeding cabinets and an aviary to accommodate these birds and endless supplies of love and interest. Am joining a club as we speak but having trouble sourcing good birds from culls at this time.

PLEASE HELP

Rarly - $20.00 to $50.00

Sometimes - $40.00 to $100

Mostly $50 to $250.00

Majority $100.00 to $600.00

Sometimes $500.00 to $1000.00

Big time $500.00 to $5000.00

This is a general guide depending on where the auction is and who is there to bid , the quality of the birds being sold and who they come from .

The more renound the breeder and the more people that want a certain bird the higher the price is likley to go , some people are not restrained by money issues and when they see a bird they need or want they purchase it reguardless .

There are bargains to be had at some auctions with "reguarded breeders" going for less than you would think .

If you can establish a relationship with some of the better breeders in your area , visit them , go to their websites , write them a letter telling them who you are and what your after , they may not have any birds for you but may be able to offer some valuable advise .

Hope this helps .

Bubbles.

Hi, If you have joined a club. My advice would be to ring the secretary and ask for some members phone numbers that may have birds for sale. That's how we go about it here. You are still up for around $50. a bird of any substance, some breeders will sell for around $20 - $25. but most are around $50. and if they are a champion breeder, most their birds start at $50. and mainly $100. upwards depending on the quality and line. You are best to stay clear of beginners as they are still learning and only some of them have good birds. You are best to find a breeder that is doing well on the show bench and buy from him or her. Don't make the mistake that many of us make by buying birds from all over the place, because vary rarely does it work. You are best to buy from 2 breeders and it is best if their birds are related to a degree.

Put it this way 6 lesser birds from one breeder that is doing well on the show bench that is lined bred for around $150 - $300 is better money spent than buying **** from every where.

This is my in put only, but how many of us have done this , yours truly also. Got lost in the have to have this bird and that bird and find out that all money was wasted.

So be patient and do your home work. Oh and my advice is to stay away from auctions, I think they are highly over priced for what you get. my opinion only again. But at least from a breeder that is willing to sell some half decent birds is money well spent.

For example a bird from the auction may fetch $300. or $600. but from the breeder's home may only get a $100.00.

But saying all this a lot of top breeders will not sell from home because they get more money from the auctions. My opinion also.

Thanks Splat

I appreciate your advise and I have done just that. I have purchased one pair from a breeder in Brisbane who is doing well on the show bench.

I am attempting to get further birds from her and she has put me in touch with another breeder from the same club that is also starting to win on the show bench.

I want to start with some decent birds rather than average ones and have been researching in line breeding.

I appreciate I am a novice at this however I am very keen to get started and breed some birds with a view of showing some as soon as possible.

This forum is proving extremely beneficial enabling me to learn from experienced breeders personal experiences both good and bad.

Regards

Will that breeder sell you any more like a couple of hens or a couple more pair because that would be the way to go. And then try and get some from the other breeder.

Unless you have bred before, I believe you need to start at the bottom and do the hard mile, learning as you go. But then I also believe you need something worth while to give you a chance to breed some chicks to keep you interested.

Good luck with it all.

Way to go.

Now you just need some hens, now that will be hard call because no one likes to part with decent breeding hens, the saying is if you want a decent hen you need to breed it yourself. Phill might know someone who may be selling some, you may be lucky.

By the way I would love to own them birds even now.
