Stay Safe Selling your Birds from Home

This is some advice for anyone selling birds from home.

In light of a scammer / bird thief being in the Perth Metro area and cruising around Gumtree advertising site recently, people need to learn to protect themselves.

If you have birds for sale, catch them up from your aviary and have them in a cage for viewing nowhere near your aviary....where the buyer can see them without seeing the rest of your birds.

Do not feel the need to proudly show off your bird aviary to strangers.

A known bird thief will check out your aviary security or not and come back at a more opportune time ( as a convicted bird thief we know of does here in perth ).

Never ever divulge your movements such as when you will and wont be home. A perth based bird thief is known to elicit this info from unsuspecting sellers over the phone and upon a visit to return at a time you arent home and steal your birds. A perth based convicted bird thief has done just this several times.

Dont be swayed by a minor sale as this bird thief often buys the first cheap bird just to gain access to your aviary info and your movements. Dont trust anyone you dont know.

ALWAYS have change in your pocket for any sales. A known bird thief has been known to show up with a hundred dollar note to buy a bird. Owner has to go inside for change and the bird thief then grabs other birds and put inside his clothing. This is a known scam from a Perth based bird thief. He has made off with birds in his pockets and down his trousers.

If you are rehoming your birds ( offering them for free ) make sure the person collecting them is a reputable bird person. Many take free birds just to breed them to death and some take free birds as a way of casing your home for future thefts.

Better you ask a fee for birds you wish to rehome and seek out a more responsible bird person.

People who ask for free birds or say they are a bird rescue must show proof of what and who they are. A recent advertiser on gumtree who posted an advert wanting free birds for rescue is a scammer and bird thief. Thank goodness Gumtree staff finally wised up with assistance from the public.

Some who say they are bird rescues are taking these free birds and onselling them or breeding with them whether or not the birds are fit for breeding.

Birds have been known to be rehomed under an agreement that the birds are retired and too old for breeding safely and later the person who offered up their birds has found them being bred to death for monetary gain and living in appalling conditions.

The perth based bird thief I speak of has been convicted of bird and reptile thefts, aviary thefts and this is still ongoing right now.

In short trust noone !!! There are scammers in your area. There are thieves in your area. They are everywhere.

Good info, and they have free access to this forum, and we supply them with photos of our birds and info of where we live.

Just food for thought.

There is a thing called social engineering, i would suggest you all read a little about it as it is very easy to get information from people

I like to see them try and get in this yard. Jake would eat them for dinner.

I tell he is as gentle as lick you to pieces if we are home and let you in but boy if someone comes here

the hackles stand up and his bark scary as.

If I didn't live here there is no way I would try and enter.

We have had plenty of people scream out and to afraid to come in. lol

But that is his job, a good watch dog.

I even go up the street now and leave the back door open, no one would ever get past Jake. lol

Even gone to Shepparton for the day and left the doors unlock. how safe is that.

Have you never heard of baiting a dog.rolleyes.gif

OH NO! I let 2 disreputable people into my aviary on Saturday............ ;)

More excellent advice passed along to me by an anonymous member

Take this with a grain of salt but I have many years experience in this field. This is a guide to how I would field an enquiry.

1. Use your instincts, when I get up and running I don't want to miss out on sales. Little old ladies and men, mums and dads looking for a pet etc aren't going to be your suspects. But if something isn't sitting right with you then listen to the little voice in your head and adopt the following.

2. Before you answer yes to having birds for sale ask them who they are. Ask for their full name name, where they are from and if they are a member of a club. Tell them straight out that you are very careful about who you sell to and that you are aware of recent burglaries in your area.

3. Ask for their number and tell them that you will check the flights for what they want. (The phone number may or may not be able to identify a crook down the track.) Then use this time to research them. If they are involved in a club, call the club and check their bonafides.

4. Phone them back, take note of how they answer the phone. Before you ask for them by name ask who it is. If there is something dodgy and they have given you a false name you might get some hesitation and discomfort at this point.. Do not give an address until you are satisfied that you are happy that you know who this person is and that you are happy for them to be at your home.

5. If it gets to the point where someone shows up and the little voice starts to go off ask for a drivers licence and record the identity details including the date of birth. At the very least record the registration details of the car that they arrive in.

6. If you end up a victim don't expect the police to be a able to solve it for you. They do not have the resources or the ability to investigate these offences properly and they don't understand the significance of the loss. Get on the front foot, let all local club and bird people know. request information.

If you are offered bird that you think may be stolen, if someone has a number of quality birds that are unrung or something doesn't make sense then let someone know, you can contact me here if you like, even if you are from another state. Again take a car rego. If you suspect something then the ability to identify that person down the track will be the most important thing.

The most important thing to remember is to use your instincts, identify your buyer and don't give an address until you are satisfied with the buyer.

Have you never heard of baiting a dog.rolleyes.gif

wouldn't want to bate my dog and then i find out about it omg you would want to get plastic surgery to get out of that one a whole face change that's like if you harmed one my kids GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR jails not so bad these days after all

If they want your birds dogs will not stop them and i dont think they will leave their name or number unless their real ugly and are after that plastic surgery.laugh.gif

Good advice Kaz.

That's horriable, who would be so mean. Yes jail once the owners are finished with them.

Oh well better teach Jake stranger danger then, and teach not to eat anything from strangers.lol

Everyone is a stranger to him. aggrhh woof

Def a eye opener...

Cheers again!!!
