Those babies are looking really promising , especially the spangle pied and the violet grey, really nice, I can see frontal rise and good width across the face. I hope they feed probably for you. The one you got back from you know who how did she or he turn out.

only got this picture from when i got her

BILD6039.jpg

shes big solid hen but i think its mostly fat she has a very small head compared o this picture i will get you one of her now

very disappointing that :{

i learn't the first lesson in the showing game

if a very well known and established breeder offers to take your hen and breed her to a really nice cock to apparently help you out

SAY NO

unless they bring a cock to your home

do not be as silly as i was to think that they would be honest and actually want to help you to :{

if it wasnt for my mentor

i truly doubt i would have my hen back let alone one of the 10 chicks they breed

but you live and learn

That sounds like it must have been quite a story, and I'm not going to ask for details :ph34r: but I wanted to say, it sounds like you have a great mentor, and I'm glad you got your hen back!:o

yes make a good story to teach others that even the very nice ones have three faces

however as you say their is enough details supplyed to just know that my word is of wise warning to all beginners it happens to all i think beginner or not you just need to know your true friends as they will be the ones whom wont ever ask you to take a bird from your home they will always offer to have the shared pairing cock or hen at your own home

yes finne my mentor is one of a kind

not only does he go out of his way to help me and drop in ones every month or few weeks but he also helps several others ranging from beginner and moving up to intermediate and i think maybe ever open n champion a truly generous person with his time and help

i have alot of trouble getting to and from the shows as i do not drive and if i havent managed a lift home he will quiet often offer one to me

and the thing i find actually the best is hes not even from my club yet this does not stop him from helping me achieve my gold to breed and show birds of quality

most my club are very busy and their daily jobs take most their time or they live miles away

the few whom are close really have no spare time to be able to offer a steady flow of assistance yet i do know that they will do their best to get someone to pop in and assist me if i am in real need as they have gone out of their way to ring around for me at times of need before i was actually being assisted full time

things he assists with is basic like just assessing the birds i have breed chatting about what look i want to instill in my flock

what breeders i am more likely going to achieve this look from by using their birds

recognizing condition with in breeding stock

recognizing hens that are supplement feeding only not nourishment feeding

recognizing hens whom are risk of egg bound

or recognizing temperament changes in with in a breeding pair

building of a family

bird over colour

recognizing mistakes like doubling up on bad features

feather problems

when and why to pull a pair out for any reason from gone out of condition to not being healthy eg sickness has invaded them either through stress or a cock over doing the feeding of hen

hes helped me understand and maintain my belief that a good bird is not always a expensive one

and how to use a smaller well breed hen to my advantage or for that matter a smaller well breed cock to a better visually appearing hen

i really owe a lot of thanks to him

as i must really do his head in with all my yattering and questions

and for his confidence and encouragement in my ability to achieve something :}

I really wish I had a mentor like yours :) It must give you some confidence that if something goes wrong you have someone to call.

well i dont really ever have anything go wrong

i pretty much was already mostly aware of issues that can arise but its good if i just need to ask a question like say i have a Chickie which would be better off destroyed sooner rather than latter and we all get the od one

its just nice to know i have a second opinion

also if i think my flocks unwell

i can reflect on him and his opinion

which is great as i find im a bit obsessed with the health of my flock

and im always worryed theirs something wrong

to be honest if it was not for him id probbly given it in as i would stress more than injoy

and id just gone back to pets as they dont have any of the issues show birds bring

i still dislike calling him as i feel im impossing on his life and time so i normally just hang in their till i see him

most times i end up just following my own instinct

about something

if i have a big issue i will call

but thats not often

what he does most for me is reinforces in my self that to continue in the game as theirs many breeders whom do give you the time of day

its just finding one

i have many people whom i can discuss and talk to about anything now it took a while however i worked out a small majority whom are truly willing to be of assistance and for all diffrent things

regarding different issues and information i may be seeking

some people are very good at pretending they are on your side and helping

but only few truly are ive found

yet i just smile and listen to everyone take in what i know to be honest help and filter the rest from one ear and out the other

mostly you can tell a honest breeder as they dont stand around bagging all the rest

nor do they crack it when their bird is put down a place due to judges decision

its a hobby after all and okay so some people have money and win through buying top birds and breeding them to each other year after year not really ever establishing their own true line

n to tell you the truth '

if i never win against these people i would not care as i know when i finally start winning on the bench it will be from my own breeding decisions are learn't ability to pair

after all to me its not the win

its about

its the socializing and consent learning of others experiences and the satisfaction knowing that even if my birds are not coming up top that i have improved every season on what i am breeding

maybe ill never have birds like these top benches

but im not really chasing that im enjoying the experience and the joy of going into my flight and seeing a new life

or the development of a young chick into a beautiful creature of in my view grace and cheekiness all rolled in one

my birs really are a rock for me and a out let from my daily routine of being unable to get out and about much

i can sit their for hours and just let the days pass and not feel like im missing anything

as im actually experiencing something a lot dont get to

No problems. I know it is a genuine concern and comment on appearance coming from someone who calls themselves "FLUFFNUT" - :lol:

well i felt like sitting down for bit try not to worry about the happenings in everyone else s life's :( sometimes things are just to sad for words

i run through a few pics and came across some the birds i was looking for

here is my most beautiful boy

he was a cinnamon grey green / blue/lacewing/opaline i brought from nubbly 5

i had him to short a time he sadly broke his neck in his breeding box feeding his young :(

something had startled him and he must of tried to fly before he got out box as hes neck was broken that was only thing wrong

he left behind 4 chicks

i kept three of them all the cocks and a friend has the hen from him :)

no lacewings :{ as his first round all died bar one chick their was one lacewing in their first chick he fathered

both him and my hen were first time breeders he was a 07 cock bird

BILD5830.jpg

i got with him

his half brother a grey green /lacewing /opaline/blue 08 boy

just as beautiful but different quality's

BILD2786.jpg

this cock breed me my seventh place getter in the vic ubc sheilds last november

this is her

BILD2116-Copy.jpg

here is mum and dad next to each other

BILD2101-Copy.jpg

here is his son brother two the lacewing

BILD2079-Copy.jpg

BILD2078-Copy.jpg

and the other hen from the clutch a light green will be a very handy bird

BILD2105-Copy.jpg

i culled the two cinnamon birds a grey cock and a Opaline cinnamon hen

they had 4 more chicks

one im culling a grey normal very small and a grey green who is getting their has the look so will keep and a small lacewing hen

whom at moment i have kept but im tossing up on to keep her or not time will tell i guess

ill try get pics the other three ive kept in my flight

the small grey is in my cull cage with my albino split culls

well when i come back ill move on to my opaline light green cock / lacewing from nubbly 5

and his progress

really kaz it is cause for me its just a picture :{

okay cool thanks

@taboo, i have not really been to many shows as i really want to work on my stud i dont feel they are show worthy

yet but i have taken a few for test drives to see where i sit in my beginner class

results are as follows

eastern district diploma show

took 10 birds

albinos took two young birds ..... came third and second in class

these birds stay in my stud :} regardless due to bloodline im working on

Grey hen ubc ,..came 3rd

and

grey hen young bird this bird got best in class then moved on and got best in variety but did not get passed anywhere else but im happy with her result

i would have had come home with a trophy only they dont give them out unless theirs more than 4 in a class they dont let you get the trophy if theirs 4 or less birds :{

my grey dom pied hen , young bird and exactly same thing a win in variety and best in class but again no prize :{

cinnamon grey spangle hen young bird , came second in class

yf blue cock young bird , second in class

df spangle white young cock , first but he was only one their so thats a given

and two lacewing young birds

one came second in class and the other first in class and then best in variety again only 4 birds so no prize

but i did get cards for on my cages :} with all the written info :}

then the next was the ubc shields in November

i got three birds selected

my lacewing chick ....seventh place

her brother a grey green ....27th place still 4th from being last :}

and a yf grey ....last place but i knew that already as was one my culls already so not shocked their :}

then recently i went to

united diploma show

i took 5 birds

i took my albino hen the one i left home last time

she placed first in class beginner

took the spangle again again same result :{ and no others :{ beginner

my sky blue spangle his brother placed first in class beginner then

got reserve young cock beginner

and my lacewing got first in class beginner

took dom pied again

and got first in class beginner

then reserve young hen beginner

so all in all i did better than i thought but all birds bar the two that got reserve came in due to being only one in the class im pretty sure except the albino

my clubs diploma is on soon march 20th

i was going to take my birds but i stuffed my show cages trying to make them nicer so i may not be taking any now

ill have to see if i can get help to fix them first

all in all i haven't really started showing as i haven't really got many good birds to take yet and really im bit put off

when ive been twice now and all u gets these Dodge little cards :{

NOT INSPIRING ME

i did get two platters for my reserve placings but to be honest id have rathered a Rosette or a ribbon seems no one gets them in vic

i wonder why people show at all really as unless you get top bird you get nothing not even a encouragement

my encouragement was ..... doesnt matter that you got reserve hen and cock as you dont get points for that :(:blink::unsure:

points dam who cares i got reserve young cock and hen in a diploma like im worried about points :P;) after all its only my second show i have been to im actually pretty dam happy with that and my fruit n cheese platters well my mum n sister loved them :) gave them one each

This worries me about the shows as we need encouragement and a reason to stay in show birds.

The good bit is your on your way to some very nice birds, well done!

GB I have my first club show this weekend and I'm only entering two birds and one of them is for my 12 year old

who is the only junior in our club. His is a white lacewing and mine is a cinnamon grey spangle both were bred from a

cock bird who is a cinnamon grey green opaline which we got from a auction, and the hen is from Daz, a opaline grey spangle

sounds a lot like you with your birds. There okay and I'm just putting them in for a bit of fun.
