Ace She seems to have really dark pins....or its just me. Potato My fluffy fat boy What surprises me is that none of them seem to be YF. He said you can usually tell if they are YF from about 10 days old. But if yours didn't come out till the first moult then I'll hold onto them and see what happens I also wanted to ask for opinions on these babies when it comes to show quality. Is there anything in particular you can look out for in young chicks when it comes to features? Link to comment

But she still has a few naked spots so I put her back in the nest. I proceeded to pick up and check the other chicks when i heard the chicks being fed. Well doormat and pie both wait outside the nest until I'm finished. So I opened it up and Ace was being fed by Gloria. I thought it was a tad strange, but cute. Is it abnormal that she is doing this? She'll be five weeks old on Tuesday. I figured it could just be that she's mimicking mum and dad. Link to comment

I leave my chicks with parents or one parent as long as possible, until they are totally eating on there own and some times they stay there until 7 to 8 weeks. As long as the parents are good parents and are not aggressive towards the young. I have some parents that you couldn't do that with but the most of them do. I also agree with kaz and GB, I keep putting mine back and back and back lol Link to comment

Gloria is fully feather and she takes every opportunity to get out of the nest. Even when I open the lid she hops on the side and preens while I check her siblings. But even though I found her on the floor of the cage nearly every time I checked, I'd put her back in the nest and she knew it, and would often not even wait for me to put her in, jumping in herself. Today I did the same. Picked her up and opened the nest and expected her to jump. Instead she turned her back to it. I thought this as strange but put her in the nest anyway (she was reluctant to go) Thats when I noticed Doormat screaming and Gloria doing the same. Well, it seems doormat has gotten a head start and laid another egg. Silly hen. Potato is no where near fledged, but she's ready to go another round. But I figured that Gloria has already been kicked out which was why she was reluctant to go back in. Now I have to ask, what do I do? If potato was older and ready to fledge I may of checked on Doormat again to see if she was ready for another round, but being the ages they are I am deciding against it. Do I take doormat out and leave pie in there with them? Or do I transfer Pie and the babies elsewhere? Its not an urgent matter as I haven't seen any aggressive behaviour coming from mum, but its something I need to take action on so that I don't get a nest full of eggs. Though its an exciting concept of having more chicks...I have a lot more hens to do that with I will most likely take photos on Monday...as I'm working all day tomorrow. Dad will continue to feed the chicks, and it leaves the hen in peace to lay again in the nesting box. Link to comment

I went out to the aviary this morning and was greeted by this: and Gloria's broken bloody body on the bottom of the cage. The way she looked....I never thought birds could be that malicious. I've been holding back tears. I loved Gloria, she was my favourite. She was sitting on the perch next to Dad and exploring the seed. Like I said, there were no signs of aggression before this. I saw Doormat chase her off the perch every now and then, but it wasn't viciously. Just a bit of a bump...no pecking whatsoever. I feel like it was my fault. But what I've learned from this is that half tissue boxes cannot hold back a desperate mother like I was informed. So there was a frantic baby and dad move this morning to an empty cage. And then there were 3 Link to comment

It is a terrible thing to lose a baby, and my heart goes out to you. Potato is looking older now and should be fine with dad in the cage. Watch him as well he may act a little crazy trying to moult his offspring so i would still add a box for them on the bottom of the cage. hugs to you again. if you write down records record this for next time the hen has a round and remove her hen possible.
