It's just I have heard seaweed is good for budgie, but I don't know where to get it.We live 1.5 hours away from a beach, and we don't go that much anyway. Is it possible to maybe dampen it and give to budgies? Also, for people that don't know, Nori is the seaweed paper used to make sushi. Here is some info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nori Link to comment

(see below) I wonder if the Nori paper would have too much salt or not? I use seaweed meal in my hand raising mix for all birds. It is extremely high in trace elements and very good for most animals. It is only used in small quantities. I have used it for dogs and horses as well. Seaweed meal is sodium reduced. Don't know about whole seaweed though. I believe Kakarikis in the wild in New Zealand nibble on certain varieties of Kelp on the beaches where they are found. Kelp and Seaweed meal is a wonderful source of Iodine which is necessary to prevent problems with the thyroid, something that can be a big problem with budgies. They can develop goitre which is a swelling in the neck. Salt is also necessary for birds. The Chlorine in salt is needed to maintain the correct alkali acid and fluid balance as well as producing stomach acids. Deficiency causes upset in the balance of alkali acid, improper digestion and loss of body fluids. Sodium helps to regulate the bodies fluids and keep an alkali acid balance. Subnormal amounts causes dehydration and an upset in the alkali acid ratio. In the wild birds would visit a salt lick and get their salt that way. Link to comment

I assume with the powder you would need to mix it into soft food? Link to comment

Looks like it's one of the few sea vegetables that's low in sodium. I'd just chop it up like parsley, or crush and sprinkle in small amounts with their other veges once in a while. As well as minerals and vitamins, it also has iodine in it. Link to comment

I know, nutirents, but there are so many other things you could use. Maybe it is because I love Sushi so much that I cannot help bu wonder why you would waste Nori like this?!?!?!? Link to comment

The reason because is, as I stated in my original post,I would love to be able to give my budgies some form of seaweed as I know it is nutritous to them, and I do not have the fresh stuff availble. We often eat sushi, like you, (It is YUMMY! ) and sometimes mum has a sheet leftover. I thought that the seaweed meal was expensive, (like $30+) compared to $3 for a packet of Nori. But I am going to look in the healthfood shops for the seaweed meal, see what I get Link to comment
