I will be heading down the coast (1.5hrs away) next week for Christmas with family for 10 days. I currently have 8 chicks in a nest box, which are thriving and going really well, and have great parents, this is their second round. My query is, I really want to take them with me, as I don't feel right asking my friend who usually looks after my birds, to do all the extra work for this lot, do you think if I put the entire cage with the parents, chicks & attached nest box in the car, they would be okay? The eldest chick will be 29 days old and the youngest 15 days old, by the time I leave. Robyn Link to comment

You need to make sure you keep the cage covered the whole time, this will make the birds feel more secure. Take out any water so it does not go all over the place, and replace it when you get there - it is only 1.5 hours so they will be fine without it for a while. It is not the best option, but you can do it. Just move things slowly, no sudden movements, and keep the cage covered. Link to comment

I agree with Dave and Kaz. I moved house with a nest full of chicks and Mum and Dad. I left all my other birds at home with Mum and Dad in the aviary but this family needed more attention. My trip was only 10 minutes, but all went well. Be sure to put the cage in a nice quiet room when you arrive to let them settle in too. Some nice yummy fresh veggies too. As you'll be romving their water for the trip, you can also put in some moist veggies for the trip so they can get some fluids from them too. Good luck and I hope it all goes well. Link to comment

The chicks are used to being out of the nest, I handle them all, and take them out for a 5-10 minute turn each twice a day, as I have a couple of friends who want them to be used to people & a bit friendlier, so fingers crossed they will travel & settle fine. I hope you all have a very happy & safe holiday season & New Year, and thank you for all your excellent advice over the past 12 months! Robyn Link to comment
