just a question robyn, when you pick your pairs.. do you look for anything in particular to match?

maybe thats your secret! ;):P

Thank you Pride, I've got some lovely pied's this year.

Alpaca B. , I managed to get a few (6) show stock birds, 1 was lost from aviary, 1 died, 2 had long feather gene chicks,1 Aquarius had hormone problem (has 6 eggs again now) , 1 Is Mum to last 4 chicks.in post she is sky -blue spangle.( plus she is fostering 2)

What I have been trying is pairing my small pet type birds with the larger show stock birds. I bought Hulk (Dad of first 8) at a pet shop. I think he is show stock and he has bred the beautiful chicks in first pics.

His mate is only a small hen, but they make beautiful babies!!

So I am going now on the past chicks each has bred, to give me a guide as to what each is split for etc. I'm hopeless at the genetic thing, so I'm just having fun trying to improve my birds colours etc. :)

p.s. have 8 others nearly out of kindy. + 12 eggs so far from 2 box's.

Adding another nest of chicks, unfortunately I could not keep all so sold ones that were very similar only "keeping one of a kind" so I have a variety in my birds.

i just love this on robyn !! nice clear markings and a cute face, and great colour too!

and isnt this one a clearflight GB

are clearflights allowed to have clear patches on their chest

i understand that it means they have no colour on flight feathers but can clearflight pieds have pied on chest?

well with all the combination's of pieds these days anythings possible but this bird has a band across chest of the right diameter of a dom pied clear-flight or dutch pieds as i know them have white bellow chest then small part under tail and around onto back( of colour) and small patch of colour under chin but banding is really not their its more white chest with colour under chin or full body colour with just clear long flights not secondary's and small patch on head

these are def dom pieds not clear flights or as i said composition pies a combination of the three pieds rec dom and clearflight

Genetics of Clearflight Pied

Summary:

Clearflight Pied - dominant

Normal - recessive

The inheritance pattern of clearflight pied is the same as dominant pied. However, clearflight pied is unrelated to either dominant pied or recessive pied, and a budgie can have any combination of the three pieds at the same time. There are only two alleles for clearflight pied: the normal gene and the clearflight pied gene. The clearflight pied gene is completely dominant to the recessive normal gene. This means that a single-factor clearflight pied looks the same as the double-factor clearflight pied. Here, we will represent the clearflight pied gene as "P" and the normal gene as "p". Therefore there are three possible genetic combinations for any budgie:

* pp - Two normal genes (homozygous) resulting in a normal budgie.

* Pp - One clearflight pied gene and one normal gene (heterozygous) resulting in a visually clearflight pied budgie that is single-factor.

* PP - Two clearflight pied genes (homozygous) resulting in a visually clearflight pied budgie that is double-factor.

As you can see, it only takes one clearflight pied gene for a budgie to display the clearflight pied traits. This makes this is an easy variety to breed. Below are some punnet square examples of pairings.

Thank's Kaz but don't worry I can get confused between anything..I keep reading over "stuff" but it's the grey matter that has the trouble.:D

They are really lovely! Gorgeous colours.

Thank you Dellouisa, as mine are pet types I'm not trying to breed anything in particular, just some lovely birds to have in aviary.
