I bought a dom pied spangle grey green hen from this year's state auction. She was a cheapie really, nice hen but not huge "wow" factor. I put her with a sky blue cock I bred last year, who is the brother to my sky who took out best blue in his show a couple of months back. She laid four eggs and all looked fertile. Just four, no more. Out of those four eggs only one hatched. Dom pied is one of my "new things". You know how you go through fads of colours that you like, well Dom Pied is my latest. I was really hoping for at least one dom pied from this pair and then thought my odds would be pretty slim, being that only one chick hatched.

Well this is their one and only chick (they fostered fallow babies and were great parents though)

It's a Dom Pied Spangle. You can just see his white spot over at the left near the wall. It wasnt a good picture, will try to get a better one today :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but can't spangles get a white spangle spot also??? A spangle spot. lol. It doesn't mean they are pied or split pied.

Either way he's a gorgeous bub Sunnie. I love grey's of any variety

yes thats true you can get spangle spot pieds whom are not pied at all

but you can see white near leg so maybe theirs a band hiding on his belly ???? whom really knows in that picture but it sure is cute :)

i do think its pied by the white at bottom of him if you look close it seems to be more than ruffled feathers down their more like a cluster white feathers id say that most probably move around and across belly

I've got to be honest, I have no clue what a Dom Pied is meant to look like, every time someone shows a picture of a Pied I'm like 'oh its a dom pied.' and then everyone says its a rec pied. The I see another one and say, 'oh its a rec pied.' And everyone says its a dom pied. Now I'm looking at this bird and the second I saw it I thought, Oh its a Dom Pied Spangle... so... Sunnie... sorry but its a Rec Pied Opaline!! blink.gif

No but in all seriousness... I think I can see what I think are Dom Pied markings on its front...

Doesnt look like a dom pied spangle to me in that photo. Spangles have head spots or head patches too. Need photos of the rest of the bird. If you are basing the dom pied part on the head spot only.....thats not enough to go on as spangles have them too.

Glad you could see it GB and you are correct :D

Anyway, here are a few more pics that hopefully will show the markings better - except once again, the pics are poor quality due to only having a phone to take them with but I believe you can see the white under the grey chest colour near the legs and you can see the dom pied spot better.

So, if he's mauve, then hopefully, if I found a violet hen for him for next year, he might possibly give me violet dom pieds?? :D

Thanks for all the comments.

Sorry Libby, he is staying with me, but you are welcome to visit sometime :D

As one parent was a Sky Blue you will not produce a Mauve. Besides it looks Grey. The first pics showed clearly it was a Pied.

Sky Blue = no dark factor (0-df), green series is Light Green.

Dark Grey Green = one dark factor (1-df), blue series is Cobalt.

Olive Grey Green = two dark factors (2-df),blue series is Mauve.

So 0-df X 1-df = 50% 0-df or 50% 1-df

OR

0-df X 2-df = 100% 1-df

The Grey Green is split for Blue and single factor Grey as it produced a Grey when paired to a Sky Blue. Check the Cheek patches.

It was really interesting reading that info. Thanks for the explanation RIP :D

Funny, I thought he was going to be something special when he fledged, but a week later and he already looks smaller than I first thought. How our perceptions change. He's still got very nice feather tho, and he IS dom pied lol :D
