Shed Aviary

Recommended Posts

I got a wonderful suggestion from Splat about converting a shed to an aviary rather than buying an aviary.

After looking around I found that buying an aviary (even a small size) would cost me alot of money which i don't have.

A shed is alot cheaper for a bigger size.

Is there anyone out there who has converted a shed to an aviary? If so, how hard is it to do?

My plan is to get a wide shed (about 2.5m) and keep half of it as a birdroom with the other half being a aviary.

I ask so many questions But I don't want to drag my parents (mainly my handy dad) into building the whole thing for me. I would like to have a go.

Best shed conversion I've ever seen, in my humble opinion, would be Daz's... I had only just starting thinking about getting into budgies and I saw his thread... It blew my mind how awesome it was! I'll try and find the thread for you and post it up here...

Here is the first shed he did...

And here is the replacement...

It is possible to turn a shed into an aviary. I did it myself. I wouldn't say its cheaper however as aviary mesh gets pricey. People are always selling second hand aviaries on ebay or in the local papers etc. you would be able to get them cheaper that way :)

it definitely is not cheep

starts out cheep

the shed bit is cheep but the rest that follows the bits that you dont think of

like

if you dont have concreat area

the mess for under it to keep mice out and the paving or sand what ever you decide to use

even the shed flooring is quiet expencive

it does need to have roof lined

as condensation will drip onto birds and give them pneumonia and in turn they will get fungal on throat in air-sacs (airsacatitus)

so thats more expense in the istulation and fake roofing

then you have your safty door and the seperation between bird room and flight

also you want to be useing mouse wire for all outside wireing or the mouse proffing of the floor was for nothing

silly me learn t  that and the mouse wire to date is 45 dollors for 10 meters i just finished

so all in all i say

you would be better off getting one ready made and just putting a fake roof in

and doing double wire with mouse mesh

oh dont forget the ventilation

and the sealing of gaps

so much more im sure ive missed

my advice

unless you breed show birds

stick to a ready made

I made a visit to a guy that specialises in custom made sheds and aviaries.

I gave him a rough drawing of what I wanted. My idea is a 2.3m x 2.3m aviary with a door on one side, a partition inside with a door in the partition (made of wire) and the other side having top half wire around front and side. So its basically a birdroom and aviary in one.

He rang me this morning with a quote of $2450 with a double roof ($2200 without) including the slab of cement. Considering the points that have been made on converting a shed...is this a reasonable price for me to aim for?

One is 1700H x 1200W x 600D and the other is 1800H x 800W x 800D. It is advertised that they want both for $130

Thats all i need to start :) I'm going to give them a call tomorrow

the first one at 600 deep isnt very good or useful as its too narrow in the depth. The second one is a vertical aviary and not really suited either.

I am on the Central Coast, NSW (more specifically Morisset)

I found this beauty on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270652836015&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en#ht_500wt_1156

Its exactly what I've been looking for in terms of an aviary. I can easily make a divider inside to have a birdroom and aviary. I will be watching this one like a hawk

Are you registered as a bidder on ebay ? Do you have the money ready ? Be aware as its an auction it may go a lot higher in price yet.

Is it near to you ?

Don't worry Kaz, I am a queen on ebay (I get it from my mum lol) I got my very first car on ebay :D

I have dedicated one of my jobs as my bird money jobs...anything I earn from it goes straight into my savings and thats where it stays.

It is quite near me. I'd say about 30mins :) I just need to figure out how I'm going to transport it if I win it. Any ideas?

:D Thats cool. I am an ebay sniper too :D

Worst thing about collecting aviaries is you have to dismantle them to transport. That means a drill to drill out any pop rivets and then you need to use screws to reassemble. You also need to go overkill on labelling everything BEFORE you disassemble it :)

Yes that is going to be a pain I'll admit :D

But I think for the size of the aviary it will be well worth the trouble :)

Ebay doesnt work like that JB. It wont stay at $70 for long and especially not with 8 more days to go.

Yes. I'll get all these people bidding on it with 3 days to go with tiny little bids...therefore pushing the price up

Then I'll come in at the last minute like an ebay ninja :P

Ahhhh see and I only ever 'buy now' on eBay, I think I've only used it 3 times, once to buy a breeding cabinet...

Buy now is alot better sometimes...at least you know you have it.

But you can also get some really great bargains on bidding items :)
