Help Me Get A Friend For Yoshi?

Hello everyone

 

It has been ages since I last posted! My little Yoshi has grown tons and is happy and sociable. He was bought from a pet store (a decent-ish one) and not hand raised so it has been very difficult to tame him. He eats fruit and seeds from our hands and will stand on our finger but not for more than 2 seconds

 

My partner and I are seriously considering getting him a companion bird. I know it is quite a late decision, but when we look to the future it only involves both of us working and going to uni more and hate the idea of having him alone all the time.

 

So my question is, what is the best kind of companion for Yoshi? Male? Female? Young? Old? I just don't want to cause him stress instead of make him happy!

 

He is a male and, although we are not sure of his exact age, I can provide a picture for the members to discuss. There is also a thread I posted somewhere when I first got him that has photos, so that might help.

It doesnt matter I dont think. Most males get along well enough. Be sure to go through quarantine though to protect them both

 

 

 

PS the budgerigar nationals will be in Canberra next year if you want to go and look

He is gorgeous! If you want a "romantic" friend for him for breeding, get a hen. But if you want a friend I would get a male. My male budgeis bond alot between themselves, sometimes they take it a little further Also, I would reccomend taking the mirror out of his cage. He may see it as another bird and this may also make the process of bonding between the two of you harder

It is not advisable to breed only one pair of budgies at a time. Breeding is a serious endeavor, involving a lot of study and pre-knowledge of what to expect. Ultravox, and anyone else in this situation, IF you were planning to breed someday, I would still advise getting him a male roommate for now, and save the hens for later on, once you know what your plans are, and you are building up a flock of several breeding pairs.

 

One male and one female in a cage together can get along just fine, but you have way more potential for problems and unwanted egg laying issues, than if you were to keep two males together.

I would suggest NOT getting a hen as you have already stated

the LAST thing you need is breeding hassles

Sorry Finnie. I agree with what you have said now that you say it. I just thought along the line if they wanted to breed them, but it probably would lead to unwanted eggs, nesting etc. Sorry

Thanks for everyone's advice. There is no way I am set up to be a budgie breeder anytime soon, I am just after a little friend for him to chat to and preen Should've made that a bit clearer, sorry guys!

Are there likely to be pet type birds for sale? :DSo enthusiastic about this comment, have been searching and searching for a budgie community in Canberra but everything listed online so far has been a dead end.
