Pong (dark green opaline cock) and Sami (albino hen) have been mating qutie regularly (mostly first thing in the morning) over the past week.

tn_Pong.jpg

tn_IMG_0052.jpg

Sami started going into the nesting box about 10 days ago, and last week Pong started going in there too. Sami has been spending more and more time in the box and this morning the first egg arrived! :) Hopefully there will be more in the days to come.

Just a couple of questions:

- When do I candle the eggs to find out whether they're fertile?

- The birds were still mating this morning - will they continue to mate while she is laying eggs?

Thanks in advance.

You can candle the eggs at around day five for each egg. No need to touch them or remove from the nestbox. Just put the torch in there and point it forward to where you can see.

Yes, they will be mating between eggs.

Does your albino have red eyes as she looks like she has black eyes in that photo.

I'm 99% sure she's got red eyes with a white iris, but I'll have another look tonight (if she comes out of the nesting box long enough for me to check!).

Visually she doesn't appear to have any wing markings (maybe they're just very, very faint). :D It may just be the light on the feathers in that photo, but I see it in that photo, now that you point it out!

She has an iris, so if her eyes are black and she does have wing markings, I guess she could be a DF spangle, or possibly a blue series dilute?

Not a dilute but possible DF spangle if her eyes are black

She's defintely an albino.

She now has 5 eggs and looks like she was ready to drop another one today.

I've candled them and it looks like at least 3 are fertile! It might be a bit early to make a call on the other two.

All progressing well!

If she is an albino she has too much suffusion in her, you really need to put her to a grey cock to fix the colour up. Green will just make it worse. Maybe you can try a grey cock next time around.

Thanks Splat. By suffusion, do you mean her wing pattern, because I'm not sure what happened with that photo, but sure has no wing markings whatsoever.

Suffusion has nothing to do with wing markings.

Suffusion is a pale wash of body colour showing through

PS you didnt get back to saying what colour her eyes are ?

okay - thanks Kaz. Not sure about the photo, but she is white all over, no colour in her whatsoever.

And her eyes are red - albino.

Thanks Kaz & GB - 6 eggs now. I didn't actually realise I wouldn't get any visual albinos from this pairing. I don't have another albino hen to put with any of the cocks that may come this nest (might have to consider my options, as I'm not that big a fan of albinos - it's my daughter's bird and she really really wanted us to breed her!). Hopefully I get some good normal hens though.

albinos are good to use as normals as they normally are either sky blue violet or grey

you could try putting your grey boy with her

all cocks will be split albino so any breeding from them the next year will start to bring out the albino hens as they will through usually one every clutch if not more sometimes none

but breeding with the split cocks to normal hens will leasten the amount of albinos being produced but also gives you a chance of some poping out as a little suprize here and their later as some the cocks will be carring dads genetic so chance some are /albino and some are not

their handy to have as all albinos will be hens for sure of blue series what better could you ask just need to find out what dark factor the hens are to put them to good use

Well she stopped at six eggs about 6 days ago. 5 are fertile and I'm expecting to see the first one hatch in about 3-4 days. Can't wait!

I've looked all over the forum, and I've seen people's post that allude to it, but I can't find anywhere where it says what to look for to identify what sex/colour/variety a chick will be once it starts getting it's tail feathers. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

I now have my first pinky! :(

It was in the corner of the nestbox when I first checked and thought it might be dead, but there was movement when I picked it up. I put it back with the other eggs and I left it for about an hour and it's still alive and tucked in with the eggs. Mum's been very restless and dad's been in there a fair bit, so I hoping it's getting fed properly.

Thanks so much Kaz. I've been searching around the forum for the past 30 mins looking for that same article and came back here to find you posted the link to it!

I just had another peak and the baby is doing well. I'll take it out and check the crop in an hour or two.

Thanks Sunnie.

The first baby is doing really well and I can see what look like chips out of the shell of one of the other eggs. Hopefully No. 2 isn't far away!

Great to see your first clutch is up and running, you can learn heaps just observing the birds behaviour.

Good learning curve for future, it's not such a nervous event next time around. :(

Baby No. 2 arrived this afternoon. When they're just born they don't move much - that's the second time I thought I had a dead chick, but it is moving! The first one is full of food and growing exponentially!! Hopefully the second one is the same.
