Seems very apt this euthanasia topic right now as I had to euthanase another hen in the aviary today. She either had a fast acting tumour or egg peritonitis. Found her on the ground and when I picked her up her whole abdomen was swollen up like she was carrying a tennis ball in there. Sorry Nubbly, it was one of your hens

Well I know now why she was attacked. Seems she was trying to nest and lay an egg in that cull cage and others attacked her because she was trying to protect her spot. Chances are high she had taken over a food dish

So far ( fingers crossed ) she seems to be recovering. Maybe its a sign I must keep her.

Unfortunately it seems no matter our best intentions, we are just always going to lose some birds. The scalped bird may survive, but another good hen was lost it seems.

The attacked hen is doing okay.....she is eating, hasnt lost any weight, her wounds are being treated and her eyes are being treated. Once the trauma has subsided from her eyes I will do an eyesight test for her and see exactly what sight she has or hasnt lost. her beak has suffered some trauma also but its mostly to the top layer and should repair itself.

 

 

 

 

 

you will note that I DONT euthenase everything with an issue. A bird has to be given a chance if there is one. The vet I worked for years ago told me

" you dont give up on an animal until it has given up on itself " . I try to live by those words wherever possible.

I so agree with those words Kaz.

 

I had an incident in the birdroom yesterday. A Clearwing was going to be coming out of the box any day now but the hen attacked it big time yesterday! What a mess. Totally bald on top, both eyes closed, even one wing damaged, blood everywhere. Took no chances, removed this bird and then took the remaining two from the nest and put on the floor of the cabinet with a up-side down container on the floor should they need it.

 

First thing I did was move it to another cage on its own to see how it was going to go over a couple hours. Sometimes they just crounch in corners and give up. Anyhow it was moving around and appearing to be quite a fighter so off I went to set up the hospital cage. Being warm at times like this can be comforting. So HC set up inside chick moved in. Main thing was to feed and settle it down for the night. Will over the next couple of days clean up wounds but not too much as they have begun to scab over. Eyes are not a real issue, bird does not need to see as I am feeding it, it does not need to look for food. Fingers crossed. I took some photos and will post if people want to see but will start another thread and not hi-jack this one anymore than I have already.

 

Hopefully Kaz's and my bird survive.

Well i tried your way today Kaz, put a hen down that was waisting away, it actually was very easy BUT i felt very sick in the stomcahe latter , Had to go make a cuppa tea and sit down and get my head together, It was the first time I have ever killed anything. Besides spiders. But it seem peaceful but Greg reckons that it was a cruled way to do it (by suffercation) he said how would you like to be suffercated) he made me feel ****.

But the hen in question has been crook for a while, I have tried everything on her to no avail. She was skin and bone like megabacteria but it didn't show up under the microscope. I was scared she would spread what she had to the other birds.

She was one hen I really wanted to keep as she was full sister to my yellow DF spangle cock. But she has now gone to heaven. she was only an 08 hen.

I have one young cock out of her from last year.

Knowing how some other breeders euthanase their sick or inflicted birds you could have turned that comment around on him. I have heard it too, and I just say back to them ( knowing how they euthanase their birds ) how would you like your neck broken by a strong pair of hands or how would you like to be in a box attached to a car exhaust ?!

I still think my method is better than the more violent ways.

How people choose to euthanase birds will always depend on a number of things. It can be done by the method one learns from a parent for example.

car exhust is not a bad as it seems. They simply go to sleep quite peacefully. It is sometimes the manner is which a bird is held gives the impression the method is not a sound one when in fact it is. In fact the toad busting campaign held up Kunnanarra once a year euthanse the cane toad by carbon monoxide (same stuff your car exhust puts out).

 

My methods for euthansing are:

1. Choloform - it is quick and simply go too sleep.

2. I hold bird in which ever hand is the strongest at the time. Place the thumb over the breast bone onto the area directly above the heart. Press hard enough that the heart cannot pump any more blood. They simply go to sleep and although it sounds like they would struggle they actually do not. I do not recommend this method to the beginner if you don't know much about bird anatomy as you may well no press on the heart and actually prolong the process thereby causing more distress to the bird.

Attacked hen is doing better. She can find her way onto a perch. Her head injuries have scabbed over and the scab is about to fall off. Whether or not she will be able to regrow feathers on her head we will have to wait and see.

well im sorry to say but this method is not fool proof

me being the fool

today i had to anesthetize a young chick

from nest

for reasons of my desecration of its future health to not only it but my stud

so i decided to do this method

only i knocked the poor thing clear out unconscious as you would a person if they were to hold their breath i didnt know what to do its heart was still beating very steady and the chick was plain knocked out

so i ran around like an idiot trying to think of what to do poor little thing

im sure it was brain dead or something

i felt so so bad

my normal method the vet told me just requires me to not really need to be near bird when it genitally goes to sleep through a self induced coma so i was devastated with this chick in my hand heart still pumping away not knowing what to do

in the end

i tossed it to the dog as i couldn't bear the poor little thing waking up and looking at me

mabe bad move but im sure that would of ended any pain it may or may not of been in if it woke up

 

so im never ever going to try this on a adult bird ever

im just going to stick to my easy simple way the vet told me was humane and works

 

just thought id share not all people may be able to do this

GB you dont release your hold on the bird until there are no signs of life. Dont just time it as in a certain amount of seconds. Every bird is different.

it was only a 5 day old baby splat

why i felt so much pain in my bad attempt i though it would of been very quick and simple

but it was not

it was quiet disturbing

specially when it was still avile after quiet sometime of me covering nostirols and holding its little beak shut

i must have done it wrong

as it clearly wasn't going to die for me

i toss all my d,i,shells to dog and clear eggs so i figered its not much bigger

quick simple solution
