What sort of cage are they ( like an aviary or seperate cages,)

If aviary... how many nest box do you have in there.

If in seperate breeding cages .... what size is cage .

If you are already trying to breed... how long have they been in the breeding box etc.

Are birds old enough etc

Aviary breeding is much harder than cabinet breeding and you need more nest boxes than pairs, I would put another 3 boxes in as they fight over boxes.

They also like their boxes up high. If you can put all boxes at the same hight as it will save fighting.

Good luck :P

Hi Cyrstal Rose, I just read this BBC FAQ article, it might help you out.

Colony vs Closed breeding

Cheers and best of luck.

Ps. What part of Australia are you? Could the temperature have some thing to do with your birds not breeding?

135m round, do you mean metres if so that makes it huge. If not it is probably to small.

If in cold climate like victoria it might be to cold for them. I haven't really got many my birds down as it is to cold. And what I have got down aren't breeding much either.

Sounds more like a cage than an aviary. More height than width....too small for 4 pairs ( 8 ) birds and breeding.

Photos please. Lets see your setup.

Plus are any moulting ?

You cant wait till they breed to then move them. You cannot move nestboxes or budgies with eggs or chicks once they have begun to breed. These are choices you must make now and before you put nestboxes in.

Cold weather may be why no breeding but also maybe they arent in condition and may be moulting ?

Is this kind of like the aviary you are talking about? If so, I would say it is a good space to breed. But it will also depend on weather, birds moulting etc. Maybe you should waituntil winter is ending and spring is just starting to come before it gets to warm? Your birds will know when the time is right

I have that cage here but we extended the front of it so they have a flight, we have our cockatiels in it.

I Think 3 pair is enough for that size cage as it is only small and they really don't have much room to fly and escape any fights that may occur.

Sounds too small for what you plan on doing with it.

Photos are needed.

The thing is.........you come on and ask for breeding help. For us to help you we need photos.......of your setup to see whats not right about that or what is right about it. We need photos of the budgies you are trying to breed. In those we look at breeding condition or not and age and moulting etc.

Photos are important and you dont give out a lot of info all at once that helps us to advise you.

So please go find the camera and take photos of the aviary and nestboxes setup, the budgies and their ceres. :D

I'm a firm believer that budgies will breed if conditions are right. Therefor, your conditions must not be. From what you have written I don't think your cage is big enough to colony breed 3 pairs. You don't have enough breeding boxes to begin with, your males and females may not be in breeding condition and winter is probably not the best time of year to breed, especially in an avairy open to the eliments.

I know you want them to breed, but my advice would be to stick around here and read up on all of our breeding topics, learn what you need to know (it's not always as simple as puting two birds together), get your setup organised, buy some breeding cages/cabnets (Cabnet breeding is so much better, for many reason than colony, especially for a beginer), and then look at breeding your birds if you still want to and if they are ready.

In the mean time, I agree with the others... post some photos of your males and females, your avairy and nest boxes and we can guide you on your best options. :laughter:
