I would give it to mine if I had it. I used to grate the carrot for my birds until I started splitting a carrot in half lengthwise and putting them in the aviary just like that. They eat 6 fullsized half carrots in each aviary between teatime and before breakfast the next day Edited June 23, 2010 by KAZ Link to comment

The budgies don't get any because the tiels demolish it. The tops are safe for the tiels so would also be fine for the budgies. When you buy carrots, the green part is usually cut off. However, if you cut the top of the carrot off and stand it in shallow water, the green part will sprout. My tiels rip off the first sign of a green shoot. The sprouting does not work in summer because the carrot tends to rot before the green top has a chance to shoot. Link to comment

I bring them home and give them a wash and hang them in the cages in large wet bunches...the budgies go absolutely crazy for them and devour tons at a time. The also play and bath in the wet fronds while they eat them. The do the same with lemon balm too. I do have a video of them so I'll try to find it and post it here. Link to comment

Just about any greens you grow for yourselves are good for budgies. With the exception of lettuces, which have too much water. But I still give my birds the darker green parts of some lettuces. I also grow mustard greens for my budgies, and as an added bonus, if you let them go to seed, they make beautiful yellow flowers that last well into fall! Link to comment
