Aviary Lights

Im a bit concerned that my birds will get spooked during the night in the aviary, I did try a 7w kids night light but it keep them awake and chirping for many night hours.

Does anyone use lights in there aviary at night?

I have young kids and they tend to go out near the aviary at night looking for toads etc and I'm worried they will scare them, my wife says where not going to ***** foot around them and the birds will have to put up with it

I have one hen on eggs at the moment and she is used to it being dark at 6pm and would a light upset her?

Will lights help my birds at night if one of my boys gives them a scare?

Low wattage garden lights are good. Too bright and the birds will talk all night keeping people awake. I didnt have my lights on last night and a very good hen flew into something in the night and broke her neck during a lightning storm.

I have always used blue globes as this is as close as I can get to simulating a night time environment.

In my experience, I have never had a hen leave a healthy nest of chicks or fertile eggs at night. I use lights at night so I can check birds after I get home but I do not use a night light. At times I have come out in the morning (I am usually in the birdroom at 6.30am) and have found the birds in the flight hanging off the wire as they were obviuosly disturbed during the night. The same disturbances have not forced hens off the nest.

 

Hens choose a safe place to nest. If they are disturbed, why would they think that it is safer outside the nest? I have enough trouble getting them out of the nest box at times - I don't think a bump in the night or a dog barking makes a difference.

 

For what it is worth, I would not use a night light.

i have never used a night light

i even walk into my aviary at night sometimes as i can walk up and grab a certain bird with out all birds flying off

i just talk to them tell them its mummy lol

and keep talking whole time im their my birds are use to me and i can walk up to them durring day to but not more than faceing them soon as i move my arm they know im afterthem

i dont use a net i find the birds get to stressed i just walk up carmly and talk to the bird i want to get its atention then i just grab it

mostly i get them first go

sometimes i dont but usually when people are around as their not useto others

 

night lights are good if you want to cheak birds at night but i dont think they really help much

i tryed it for two weeks but made no diffrence

never use a torch this does freak them out

if theirs a light on at night i think this gives hens more reason to leave nest so im with clearwing lights off night is night

i find the cocks wake earliy to mate when sun rises if its been dark all night

and hen comes out for stretch

some say they help hens back to nest but i never known a bird that cant find its nest if it did leave it for anyreason

Just need to clarify something here. I only use a night light in the shed, it is pitch black in there. The aviaries are going with what ever nature throws at them during the dark hours. When I had the big shed up and running it was dark too like my little shed (current breeding room), even nature doesn't get that dark.

My avairy has lights but they go off at about 8pm , I dont then have night lights . I only have the lights so that I can feed and water them in the cooler months after work. I also have a Radio playing all day .

i have got lights in my breeding room but not in the avairy i go in to my avairy at night and thay only fly are round if i grab a bird

i use solar powered xmas lights, it give a liitle light to one corner of the aviary and i don't have to worry about power usage. the bird seem to settle to sleep closer to the lights.

i tryed that

the birds ate them and the litghts would go out after 5 hours regardless

i even tryed garden lights close by but i dont bother now

only ever had one death from neck brack

but that was due to me putting birds in at dusk not letting them know their new inviroment :question:

I run a mozzie zapper in the birdroom. it puts out a blue light for the breeding room and also slightly lights up the flights which are off the breeding room also.
