okay To Keep Them In Your Bedroom?

Is it okay if i keep a budgie in my bedroom (in a cage of course). ill remove anything thats dangerous for it before i let it out of the cage.

I don't see why not, but I think budgies like to be in a social environment, and like to see what's going on etc. They like to be near people, so if you were to be in the living room with other people/family, I'd bring your budgie with you so he/she doesn't get lonely.

ill be spending a lot of time with it (once i get it). and ill leave the tv or radio on in my room while im at school. are tv and radios safe?, when i let it out of the cage will it chew the cords or anything?

Yeh, I think they're safe. Your budgie probably would chew at a cord if it found one. I know my budgie sometimes try's to chew the mouse cord on my computer. So you'll need to keep your eyes on him/her when he/she is out.

okay then thats alright. i just have to remember to have a large sheet over my bed when his out so he/she doesnt poop on it otherwise i wont be getting much sleep. :laughter:

He shouldnt be out while you are asleep :laughter:

 

Make sure there is somewhere in the room for him to be................you can make a play area by putting a large twiggy branch in a pot of cement so you have a stick like xmas tree sort of thing where he can sit and play with toys you can hang on the branches.

Make sure you dont use scented candles or aerosols in the room...no spraying deodorant, hairsprays etc

Remember to vacuum A LOT !! as dust levels will be high. One flap of the wings and seed husks and dust goes everywhere :laughter:

If you are staying up late with the light on his cage will need to be covered so he can sleep.

If you have other pets, make sure door is always shut so he doesnt become a cat or dogs dinner ( it has been reported on this forum that pet budgies have become another pets dinner )

Quiet is a sign of danger to them so if you arent there play the radio or TV and dont have him out of the cage unless supervised.

Try to discourage floor areas as many budgies get trodden on and sat on if under bedcovers.

okay what i ment by not getting much sleep is because there would be poo on the bed. lol. im planning on buying a playgym if i find a nice one, or my dad might make somthing. no deo got it. yeh ill have him covered but im normally not up to late what would late be like 12am or 10 pm?. budgies become other pets dinners but have other pets ever been a budgies dinner?. if he/or she happens to be on the floor ill make sure everyone knows its there, also im planning on putting the cage on a table well like the dressing ones, there is a gap the size of the index and middle finger (well my fingers) im guessing alot of dust and seed in going to fall down there. the vaccum cant reach it so what should i do about that. i can get some pictures if you dont get what i mean.

True..... dad had a budgie as a kid and his cat slipped through the bars and ate it. Unfortunately for the cat it couldn't get back out after he'd had his little meal.

I know it is just one budgie but I have heard and read that keeping a budgie in your bedroom is not healthy for the human because of the feather dust and breathing it in while you are asleep it could cause breathing issues, with 1 I am sure it is not a big deal but I am putting that out there.

if it becomes a problem, i can probobly move it. just have to make sure to keep my room clean. i usally keep the window slightly open because my beds next to it and i like the fresh air when i sleep. would that be considered a drought or wtever you call them and be bad for a bird because ill have it covered with a sheet most likely at night anyway

not if you put something over the cage at night... should be fine.

 

In regards to keeping your room clean, you can get cage skirts I think they call them, they are meant to keep the seed in the cage when they fall down, not sure how successful they are but maybe someone else will know... its like a fittet sheet that goes on the bottom of the cage...

Not all budgie mess drops downwards.

Think about it,

Every flit across the cage, every flap of the wings sends the seeds husks into the air. Your bedding carpet, curtains etc gets covered in DUST.

lucky i dont have carpet its wooden floor boards and the curtains are on the otherside of the room. ill have to move my clothes some where else but i dont have that much so it should be fine. im taking out a closet because its got a mirror on it and yeh the only thing im worried about is the gap between the wall and the table(wtever) dunnu how im gunna clean in their. i might just move the whole thing forward so the vaccum fits

Why ? If its because of the budgie, rig it up so you can cover the mirror when hes out. Same problem with windows and budgies flying around anyway.

So true, my computer room since Merlin is in here full time is the so dusty it is not just the bird feather dust, the seed shells too...I personally would not keep a budgie in my room because of the allergans and I am not allergic to dander or dust but it is unhealth for it to be in your lungs and settle there. It is a personal choice and if this is the only spot you can keep him then I would make sure you keep his cage very clean and do the best you can.

I have my birds in my room. l use an airpurifer in my room. I clean the bird cages everyday. l also spray my cockatiel and budgie at least every week to help keep the dander down. So far l have had no problems.

yeh i guess i could cover it with cloth or tape paper on it. i dont really need the mirror

The point being made is mostly about a persons state of health with feathers and dander and dust inb keeping a bird in the bedroom. I guess that can all be alleviated by keeoing things very clean and distrfree and vacuuming a lot.

A friend of mine who suffers asthma and was hospitalised recently due to a really bad asthma attack, has a cage a budgies in her living room..............about 30 budgies. Too many for the cage they are in but she wont listen to me She still doesnt get it why she keeps having asthma issues. The dust and seed debris and dander in that house in incredible !! Even I cannot breathe over there, nor can my husband, so we sit out on their patio rather than sit amidst the dust and rather than trying and talk over the loud sounds of the budgies right next to us inside.

We encouraged them to get an aviary for the birds to be outside. The aviary has sat there for 6 months or more and she still hasnt put the birds outside in it. She's not all that smart to say the least and trying to make her understand is very very hard

This sounds like my mums house. She has her dinning room full of birds and when i walk into her house i get a very itchy face and nose. She is not so bad now but at one stage she had 2 budgies ,5 cockatiels, 1 sun conure, 1 canary, 1 galah all in separate cages. 1 little budgie in your bedroom would be fine Houman. You sound like you really care about the hygiene and health of your little friend so i doubt it will get out of control like my mums house.

One way I try to keep the dust, seed and feathers down, and you do get a fair amount with even only one bird, is a small rechargeable Black and Decker dustbuster type mini vacuum.

I use this to hoover the cage at least once a day to remove seed husks and feather dander, and it only takes seconds to clean the floor area around the cage as I have laminate wood floors. This is on top of the thorough clean the cage gets every other day.

It sounds labour intensive but it really isnt, just a couple of minutes keeps you on top of things, and the vacuum is always on charge for when it is needed, it saves getting the full size vacuum out all the time for a small couple of minute job.
