My 2010 Journal

This go she laid 3 eggs, last one was on the 28th. They are due to hatch on the 14th, 16th, and 18th. all appear to be fertile, I've candled all three and all seems well. I have a feeling that #2 may hatch early, it seems further developed than I'd expect it to be. Usually on day 5 you can see the heart beating, but it was visable in #2 on day 4 and is not clearly a developing embryo and it's body is visable as would eb expected for a 6 day old egg, not a 5 day old eggs.

#3 is also showing signs of a heart, but no clearly visable veins, so it may be early as well.

#1 developed as I expected. this was day 5

Hector spends a good deal of his time in the box with the hen, as a result the eggs have been rolled through some of his droppings.

The egg marked #2 is pipped and vocalizing, hopefully by tomorrow morning it'll be out. #1 I either marked wrong(which I dont think I did because I tracked the developement) or is slow, but I hear tapping inside the egg and the chick inside is still alive.

I'm hearing squeels from the box now, must be getting close. And last I checked #1 has finally pipped but #2 is likely going to hatch first.

We got chicks, I helped #1 a little as he got chilled last night and made absolutely no progress in 12 hours. He's now out of the egg and squeeling a little bit, but he's not being fed. I think they did feed #2(first hatched) as his crop is yellow, he's also a little bigger than #1.

here they are http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/rou...pictures028.jpg

This is #2(first hatched) do his eyes look plum? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/rou...pictures030.jpg

And little #1 close up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/rou...pictures029.jpg

Hector is such a devoted dad, he's spent all morning in the box with his family.

Shouldn't they be getting fed? They are gorgeous! It does look plum, but then I've only seen a few pinkies myself.

well little #1 died last night. The odds were so stacked against him from the start, he hatched late, when he hatched he had a vein hanging from his yolk, it dried out but during preening the hen must have pulled on it or something and pulled his insides out. I put him in an incubator and hoped it was just yolk and would withdraw on it's own. I got 3 meals into him, but he didn't make it. The hen knew something was wrong she left the box immediately and let me take him without any commotion.

#2(first hatched) is still alive and doing well, they are feeding him and he's doing great, learning to stand up right like a big bird already.

Today is #3's due date

What you have described of chick number one is what you would see of an early hatching not a late hatching...ppossibly egg #1 was meant to be egg #2 ? When they hatch early and like that, they rarely survive. Sorry :D

I'm positive egg #1 was #1, it was further along in developement than the others, and they were marked. The chick in egg #3 is in the aircell now, no extrnal pip yet, but all seems well.

I dont think #3 is going to hatch, there doesn't seem to be any movement inside the egg. I'm going to leave it in the box just in case. I assume she let it chill, I've found it a few times behind her while she was sleeping huddled over the chick. The joys of first timer pairs. :P

The chick(Stormy) however is doing just fine, growing and squeeling as a chick should.

I'll have pics tomorrow

This is the first time I've had issues with first timers as well. Though they seem to be very devoted parents.

I removed #3, still no movement and it looks like the membrane is starting to seperate.Stormy is doing very well though, getting bigger by the day.

It's amazing what a day can do, yesterday Stormy was still in the sleepy/dont care/cuddle stage, today s/he's a little spit fire, moving around making baby noises and flapping wings. His/her tail feathers are pinning out and the pied spot is visable.

Based on this picture, what makes you say she is not an opaline chick?

See now, based on these pics, with the white down, I am thinking that she definitely is an opaline chick

what are mum and dad again? They were both YF Pieds right? was just dad opaline?

Hen is opaline, sexing by opaline would be out of the question. And the chick has black dots, which indicate that it will not be opaline.

you can see the dots in this photo

pictures063.jpg

The cock is also golden face, not YF, this chick should be both as the hen if YF.

I do think it'll be heavily pied though, possibly DF, as both parents are dom pieds.
