The challenge you face is that if you wanted to pair them up so that 2 budgies' genes mix together and make a more complete show budgie you will have to control the mating and pairing so that what you want to achieve actually happens. This is impossible to do in a colony breeding scenario. Remember even if you do decide to get some breeding cabinets and set them up in a breeding area, budgie sperm can last in the female for at least a week Edited January 30, 2010 by renee Link to comment

I was thinking of making the smaller part of the aviary for a breeding room but i cant find any breeding cages anywhere. I was thinking of enclosing that area with wood but dont have the money at the moment. I also cant find any show quality birds anywhere (I would really love a yf grey cock or a clearbody). Thanks Link to comment

Is it just the opposite of selective breeding? That is a very succinct way of describing the difference. Colony or Aviary breeding is when you pop some nest boxes into the aviary and let your birds choose the nests and their mating partners. Cabinet breeding is when you separate the sexes prior to pairing up and then you introduce your selected pair into a breeding cabinet with nest box so you in effect you are controlling the mating process and the outcome of the chicks' genetic make up. I also cant find any show quality birds anywhere (I would really love a yf grey cock or a clearbody). Thanks I think Dean NZ is a member of a Show Budgie Club ... maybe you need to do a google search and take it from there. Of course if you do join a Budgie Club you may be even more "pressured" to go down the cabinet breeding path than anything any one has said here. Edited February 1, 2010 by renee Link to comment
