Excellent thread Robyn! Great to see the before/after and chickie results and if I see this in my aviary I will know what to try.

Thank's Nubbly, just goes to show how everyone here can help others. I would never have thought a bird could have hormone probs. Matt said his bird was sterile unfortunatley, so maybe mine was younger or hadn't had the trouble as long, either way he helped put me on the right path and got a great result. :)

Glad he came through all right in the end. Maybe Matts bird was already sterile and it didn't have anything to do with that problem.

Thank's Ratsy, there are four hatched now, well fed and growing quickly. Kaz thought first chick could be plum eyed, it's dark but checking pics my second one IS plum. I think that's cinnamon or pied? Can't see cinnamon, hen is just norrmal sky-blue don't think she's split. Aquarius is yellow faced, opaline, spangle. Maybe other splits as well who knows, can't see cinnamon on him. Still trying to get a handle on genetics. :D

I've been told that cinnamon can be carried by males but not females so maybe it's cinnamon and he's split.

Yes......cinnamon can be hidden ( split for cinnamon ) in males and seen ( visual ) on females since its sex linked. Males can be cinnamon if both parents are or one parent is visual and one is split. Females cannot be split for cinnamon...they either are cinnamon or they are not.

Hi, I have a bit of a puzzle with this bird.

I bought it in May 09 thought it was a Cock bird. picture 1. (Colours a bit different in this picture) I didn't try to breed this bird this season.

cerewhenbought.jpg

I looked at this bird yesterday and it's Cere has changed. picture 2.

cerenow.jpg

It is being "chatted up" by this violet Cock only bred this season(Aug/Sept.) picture 3

yfspangleandvcock.jpg

Can anyone say which sex the Spangle is?Because I can't decide.

I didn't try breeding this bird and it didn't really show any interest one way or the other in Aviary. But Cere was always blue until now.

hi in picture 1 i think its a cock as the ceres are blue, as for picture 2 i think its a female in breeding season as there ceres go a dark browny colour when they are ready to breed

It's great G.B. We now have nine.First couple are starting to get a bit of colour. Oldest has the Aqua colour in it's wings with yellow pin feathers on head will have to wait a bit yet. I'm dubious about last egg hatching. It's got a scratch out of shell, done from outside, probably a claw. The membrane looks intact but it's getting a browny tinge about it, a couple of days to go yet so I'm not very sure of a live chick. All others are doing well. I've got Hulk's lot in another cage they have 7 from 9 so far. I added oldest of their's to foster cage as well, giving foster cage 6 chicks. :P Babies everywhere. Plus egg's in 2 other cages, 6 & 4 so far. :bluebudgie:

My first chick took two days to hatch, robyn. I thought it was dead in shell for sure, but then....

So, did it hatch?

Sorry Ratsy, yes it hatched, sort of, I found it this morning half out of shell but still stuck and sadly it had died. Don't know if the shell being scratched had anything to do with it.

I suppose it is a perfect score for Aquarius as far as it goes, he filled all 10 eggs, but we stumbled at the last hurdle.

Still The rest are all going great guns, oldest is showing aqua wings, 2 centre feathers of tail are white. Read what that means somewhere but can't remember. I'll post picture of foster nest chick's, I changed bedding to-day and took picture.

This nest has 2 of Aquarius's, 1 of hulk's, 3 of their own. Aqua chick & I think yellow pin feathered one are Aquarius.

Wow, Thanks Kaz, so if it's following Dad's mutations, would it also be a hen?

A few more chick picture's.

Also adding pics of Aquarius's chick's. These in foster nest, Blue spangle & Cinn? in back left corner, are no 1&2 Chick's

Chick in corner looking into corner with blue tail showing cinnamon is HULK'S fostered chick. Cinn. looking out is foster mum's chick. (both mum& dad cinn)

24blaquno2frrno1.jpg

Rest of Aquarius's clutch. Look's like a violet spangle? it's showing really violet already. Don't know about rest.

25restofclutchno1.jpg

Also adding picture of Hulk's brood 8 from nine last one died, as well as Aquarius's 10th. Oldest in foster nest.

hulkrazorbacksclutch.jpg

Look's like Dad is split? masking cinnamon as neither mum or Dad show it visually, I think verdict was cock can mask cinnamon but not hen? Oldest chick in foster cage showing cinnamon = left corner chick look's cinnamon also. Hope I got that right.

Cheer's any answer's welcome. :D

Thank's Kaz,

So I am thinking the chick's showing cinnamon will be hen's? As mum's don't show cinnamon. Neither does Aquarius, or Hulk for that matter so both Cock's?? mask, split or carry? cinnamon whatever the right term is? :D

Thank's Kaz. I have changed nest material twice this week, I have woodshavings in all nestbox's and change it every few days. This box seems to get more wet, muddy type mush in bottom than others. I've been replacing it with fresh shavings for little chick's benefit. With 7 chick's it doesn't take long to get messy. I added rolled oats one day but it seemed to make it worse. Mum keeps throwing out new stuff so, I think, she think's she's going another round. I've got new's for her!!. It's too cold now for another lot and after 9 chick's they have done their bit for the budgie population.

By adding seed to box is it just to encourage chick's to forage or just for the cleanliness of box? I have added a handful or so of seed to box's for oldest but haven't shown any interest so far that I know of. :)

By making it seed only, the older chicks will learn to eat and they in turn will feed the younger chicks taking the extra load off the parents.Seed only.

Thank's Kaz,

I've only been putting a handful or so into box but it sort of dissapears into shavings etc. so I'll try it seed only because Mum and Dad are working hard to keep up.

Do you add gum, or bottlebrush etc to breeding cages? I gave mine a bit of bottlebrush yesterday which they demolished. Is there any harm to chick's while they are young?

P.S. Love your baby picture's

I give mine Peppermint tree branches in breeding cages.

You will begin to see the chicks eating the seed once they have seed bedding, and you will see the older ones feeding the younger ones.
