Thanks GenericBlue .... she is an avian vet  ... I had the same thoughts as you, but then she said it could be harmful so I don't know. Maybe if it upsets his tummy which is already upset could make the runny poo thing worse?

I'm still not giving it to him today, and he's much the same.... behaviour wise.

Same as yesterday, he seems better if anything, but it's so marginal that it's hard to know if it's actually a change or not.

He's been doing this cute but annoying thing a lot where he comes up so close to the side of the cage for a scratch, but then stops JUST out of reach of my finger, and gets all fluffy and expects me to be able to scratch him even though I can't get my finger in any further lol :) but that is nothing to do with his sickness, he always does that.

Oh one more thing ---- his cere is changing colour. Getting darker.... could that be because of the lucrin injection or is it a sign that the vet is right about her hunch of something to do with the testicles?

Cosmo went for his second lucrin injection today.

He's looking so much better! I've seen him kick his bottom twice, but previously he was doing it constantly. It looks so much less swollen too. His poos are still really big but they aren't as runny anymore. He is so much brighter- he has been talking and chattering again... and he stands up in a proper posture rather than fluffed and slouched forward.

We're really happy of course as he must be feeling better but I'm still trying not to get my hopes up too much as we don't know what is wrong. His cere has got darker, and he's lost 5 grams since last Friday :D

He saw the nurse this time, so unfortunately it wasn't the same vet as last time so we couldn't get her thoughts on the comparison between last week and this week.

*Update*

Cosmo is looking so much better! Seriously, looking at him you could not tell how swollen his vent was a week ago. Poos are still about double their usual size, but are solid again. He hardly ever kicks himself anymore. He is no longer fluffed up and sleepy.... he is noisy and active and pretty much exactly his old self again.

Obviously I am thrilled..... but also very confused. I seriously didn't expect him to recover, because we didn't even know what was wrong so I thought it was unlikely that we could have been treating the correct thing ! How can this be? Should I still be very worried even though he seems well?

I'm going to ring the vet tomorrow and see what she says.

A lot of attention and warmth will bring a bird back and of course love. Everyone says it is just a bird but you proved otherwise. I am glad he is well. Yes always keep an eye on him especially during the molting or cold spells this is when they can get sick quickly.

The vet said that we can just continue with lucrin every 1-3 months and that nothing else needs to be done unless he becomes sick again!

I am stunned.... at his worst point I was 99% sure we were losing him..

Krosp, I am so happy to hear he is doing better. Sunny is still doing the same as before. But he is chirpy. So we are not complaining. Today he is kicking his vent again. His bottom is dirty. Will clean it again tomorrow. The skin is crusty from all the attention he gives to keeping it clean. We will by pure aloe in to help him a bit there. He hates my hands... but today snacked on some wholesome piece of bread while on my hand. He prefers my head now... :) We are keeping an eye on him... but all seems to be going well.

That's such wonderful news, so happy he's doing so well!

How is his cere looking?

His cere was mostly normal but a little bit darker purple down the bottom than it should be when we first took him to the vet two Fridays ago. Last Thursday when we took him for his second lucrin injection, I noticed that it had got quite brown and flaky down the whole bottom part. Now most of that brown crusty layer has gone, except for a little patch right in the middle.. and underneath it seems to be back to the similar bluey/purple colour it was before. It's hard to tell though because the changes are quite subtle.

Montie I'm so sorry to hear that Sunny isn't improving as much as Cosmo has :) I hope he gets better too.

We weren't keeping our hopes up too high about Cosmo's health improvement lasting long as he was so so sick last time....

But this time his symptoms have changed. He doesn't have a pooey bottom this time.

Now he's just got a crop full of air, it's so huge that his head is on a weird angle :party0011:

And he's lost his spark since yesterday.

He had been SO much better the last few weeks, chatting and talking and even learning new words. Then suddenly since yesterday he's gone like this.

:)

So anyway.... given his previous symptoms a few weeks ago... and that he's just had three weeks of lucrin injections and responded well to it.... does anyone have anything else to recommend that I try over the weekend before taking him back to the vet? Should I put the lamp back on him even though it's really hot weather now?

I'm wondering if it's really worth it to fork out the $300 for the blood tests and xrays? If we can only afford either or, which would be better? The main reason we chose not to last time was because the vet indicated that there wasn't a whole lot that could be done for treating most of the things we could have found given that she found a tumour and strongly suspected a cancer.

(My previous thread is in this subforum too.)

try a pro biotic as the medicatiuon may had a effect on him

thats what i would do

also i would listen to see if hes wezzing he may have air sack might

and if he is gagging it could be milled cause of yeast infection

hence the probiotics and need of

im not really sure as i cant see him

try gentally squizing the air out his crop

if its just air he may be sucking this in himself

i know it sounds weird but i have known a few male budgies to do this

when i asked their breeder about it they just said its just something some cocks do when trying to impress their hen

although i never have had it in my flock so...

but try pro biotic in water it cant do anything but good for him

Thanks GenericBlue

So.... do you think a lamp is needed when it's 30+ degrees?

Do you think probiotics would be in regular pet shops as that's probably all I can get to tomorrow... and if so do you know what name they might be sold under?

Krosp, have you got a photograph of what the crop looks like? The previous thread that you have is in a weird format for me and it means I have to click and open every reply that has been posted and I am tired of it so thought I'd just post here.

I have a bird with a distended crop, she fills it with food and looks as though she has a big growth on her chest, but then when she is empty she doesn't look any different from any of the birds in the flock.

Anyway, I asked the Avian health lecturer at university and he told me that normally the birds with this end up with food that sits down the base of the crop and it starts to ferment there and causes a few big problems for the birds. He talked of doing surgery to staple the crop in bigger parrots which meant that the food carried on down the digestive tract as it should.

Without a photograph or reading all the individual posts from your last thread I don't know whether I am completely barking up the wrong tree but if this is what it is, I looked in an avian medicine book and it said that you can flush the crop via crop needle which will remove all the fermenting seed. It gave a solution to use to flush the crop but I honestly can't remember what it was.

If you would like I can go across the bridge to uni and check it out for you. Otherwise maybe try and google distended crop ... it may come up with something useful, but may also yield useless results as the internet often does.

If you need anymore information about it get back to me and I'll head across to the library and scan the pages you need.

All the best.

I agree with Hamish. I have seen this with older hens who get an infection from a distended crop. I have treated it with sulfa followed by pro biotic.

Man everyone on this forum is so extra lovely  I've had so many kind offers to mail stuff and now Hamish offering to walk across the bridge on this hot day to the library!

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Hamish -- my last thread it actually had nothing much to do with the crop (although he has had a big crop for a while but it was normally just after he ate and it always felt full of seed before so I just thought he was stuffing himself.

My previous thread was about a month ago..

He was totally normal, there was no warning, and then suddenly one morning I came and found him kicking his vent with his feet. He had a pooey vent and it was all fluffy and swollen. We took him to the avian vet that day and she said she could feel a lump in the vent, maybe in the testicle. We decided to go on a lucrin treatment and see if it helped. So he had three injections of lucrin, and last Thursday (ie a week and a half ago) was his last one. One week after the first one I saw quite a change, and within a few days after that he was bright and vibrant and seemed so well again. Now a week after finishing the treatment he's swollen up wtih the crop. Originally there was no vent issues, and now today he's gone back to it being swollen and him kicking it.

Liv I might try sulfa... the vet did tell me not to last time as she'd done a crop and stool sample and she didn't think there was anything.. but since he's so sick I think I'd rather try something that nothing...

Krosp the link above is a photo of the testes in situ. You can see the digestive tract has been displaced towards the tail (it would normally be sitting on top of the testes), maybe you should have a feel and see if there is any sort of lump in the region. If the vet could feel a lump by the vent I don't really understand how it could be the testes unless it was VERY large?

I have done a few post postmortems on birds with fatty lumps in the digestive tract cavity, and to be honest, most could not be palpated from the outside without a lot of pressure so they must be relatively pliable in the warm animal.

If the lucrin helped then you could assume that it has to do with the testes, is he in good condition at the moment? Cere blue and bright? Could it be that his testes are SO large because of the breeding season that they are impeding the flow of feces?
