I've been looking around the two petshops that are close by to me (pets paradise & pet center) and I can't seem to find the iodine that can be added to the drinking water for birds. I can only find iodine blocks and to tell you the truth, all my bird does with blocks of minerals is play with them or totally ignore them and not use them, so I think it would be pretty pointless for me buy him one. Does anyone know of any places that sell liquid iodine? And could someone tell me roughly how much it would cost for a bottle?

Go to your chemist shop and ask the chemist to bottle you some up. Ask for aqueous iodine also known as Lugolls. Cost determined by the chemist.

Keep in mind iodine is used as surgical scrub and thus you don't want to overdose your birds. Plus it smells like potatos.

5-7 drops per litre of water.

err on the side of caution with iodine, only needed in trace amounts and too much is poisonous.

Agree with DrNat there. I don't give iodine in water at all. I use Kelp as my iodine source which is one of the ingredients to my home made calcium blocks.

Might have a problem there. I have to try and remember it. I never wrote it down. I developed over some years. Lucky I still had some blocks left and that they don't go off. Nubbs got some off me so it would be interesting to hear what she reckons of them.

 

Once I get some of this rubbish sorted out around the place I'll start to experiment again. Shouldn't take long to work it out.

You will not find it on the shelf, nor will a chemist shop assistant know what you are talking about. You ask to speak to the chemist themselves and they will make it up for you.
