It does depends on your Breeding area set up, but I think you are making things more difficult for yourself if you breed from late December thru to February. Link to comment

I have shifted all of my breeding cages over to the dairy as it seems to be about 5 degrees cooler over in the big shed than it does at the house. The only problem that seems to be occurring due to the heat is the fact that it is literally cooking my eggs . We have had days of 46+ here and even in the shade the birds still get way to hot, I have opted for the sprinkler on the roof of the aviaries now just to try cool it down for them. I had 2 hens due to hatch 3 days ago and after the day of 47 I have just been out and they are all dead in the shell .If we keep getting these hot days I am going to put all my birds out and rest them until after the summer heat. The dead in shell will be due to the hens getting off the eggs due to being too hot in the nestbox. You can replace the nestbox cover with some aviary mesh for the daytime and replace the wooden cover again for the night. Also make sure there are air holes drilled into the top part of the nestboxes. Edited January 20, 2010 by KAZ Link to comment

Yep backlining is applying chemical to the backline of an animal (along the spine). Can backline cattle (using cattle pour-ons, can backline sheep etc etc). Can be done directly off-shears or for sheep in long wool. Can be done for lice treatment or flystrike preventative. In this case it was off-shears lice treatment and it was F-ING HOT. Today however it's about 20 degrees cooler here. Go figure?! As far as for breeding in Jan/Feb - have done so for the last few years. I just cannot get good breeding results over winter and get great results in summer. 2 healthy hatchees in yesterdays heat is pretty much how it goes for us. BUT it is really nice in the breeding room even in the heat - so long as the cooler is on the shutters in the aviary are open and I LEAVE the birds alone and don't disturb them during the heat of the day. We have had nearly 2 weeks straight of 40+! My poor birds have just about had enough, they just sit around all day & have a bit of a flap around at night when it eventually cools off. I'm not sure who is more exhausted - them from the heat or me from filling up the cooler every 30 mins! No relief in sight here for at least another 5 days. we all make it. Link to comment

It would be perfect if my darling puppy didn't have a "thing" for the hose! or is it just the sound of running water? Hopefully we have seen the last of our over 40 days.
