Hi Everyone, :glare:

Right now i have a few pet budgies but in the future im looking into purchasing and showing budgies, i definetly love the blue, mauve, violet colourings but not sure what mutation/Breed is the best when it comes to shows??

How do you become a registered breeder,

where do you learn about banding,

what kind of set up would i need

and how many budgies is a good amount to have and show,

do you keep them in an avairy??

what is the best position to build an avairy in your yard for wind and sun exposure

What is the best kind of avairy to buy or build etc.....

so many questions (as usual) but id appreciate any advice you have!! we are building at the moment and the house will be finished next year so once the house is done id love to get the avairy happening but would love to know where to start so next year i dont make any uninformed decisions????

Thanks guys

For starters you need to nuild or buy an aviary I think best position is opening facing north or east, I am not goodwith my compass thing so I may have it wrong bbit north is down the bottom right, south is to the right and east is to the left and west is up the top, any way west and south winds are the worst if I remember rightly. SOMEONE can correct me on this as I have had 3 UDL cans because it was so hot trying to build Kaz's travel cage.

Anyway probably 20 birds would be enough to start with with a couple of extra hens. You need to join a club which then you can order rings extra.

Then you need some type of breeding room an old she or part of your garage if you have one an old dunny that you don't use anything that you think is suitable just to get start, improvements can come later if you are serious.

I hope this helps

OOps you will need breeding cages also sooner or later

BBC forum has amongst our members, show breeders here in Perth..........myself and Renee, Nubbly, Fran Mc Laughlan, Jan Mc Mahon and RIP and so on.

You need to tell us your area so we can advise you on clubs. Joining a club is how to learn things and to get contacts for better birds. You cannot colony breed show birds so you need breeding cages. the aviary is just their flight space and holiday home

A few show breeders on here from Perth would be able to sell you some good birds to start out...trying to find them in petshops by chance before you learn a little more is a waste of time in most cases.

PM me for details about clubs and we will try and take you to an interesting event over the next month or so before we all break up for Christmas. There are two club auctions coming up too.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to visit other people's places and see what they have done- this will give you some good ideas. If you'd like to come and see my set up, just PM me and I will give you my details.

There are 3 Budgie Clubs in WA. The Metropolitan Budgie Club (in Bassendean) is having an auction in December and I think the South-West Club (in Mandurah) is also having an auction at the end of the year too.

I would not jump into this and make sure you have a suitable aviary before getting any birds.

Also try having a look at the MBC website (Metropolitan Budgerigar Club)

SWBC has a written auction at the end of November. Might be a good chance to get a step up into show stock without outlaying too much.

Just be aware that the best show birds are often not the pretty coloured ones - a real trip-up for the beginner. A good bird is a good bird REGARDLESS of it's variety - a grey green with great features is still going to be a beautiful addition to your aviary - just don't get 100% hooked up with pretty blues, violets and mauves as you will end up chasing your tail.

I totally agree Nubbly. This year i have been trying hard to breed good greens not blues because without good greens you get no where fast. :) And actually I have quite a few nice greens now light and dark but still need to focus on grey green and greys.
