Severe Lower Back Pain

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, for the last four months a thirty year old back injury has come screaming back at me[as it often does] to the extent that I admitted myself to hospital in july and the good news was no problems as far as x-rays were concerned. I was loaded up with drugs and sent home to rest. That night I was awoken with the worst constipation pains ever[drug related] and vowed not to take them again. But what to do? The next day my mate fortuitously called in and in a solemn voice told me he didn't believe there to be any injury that can not be fixed by stretching and although it hurt to stand and put my hands just above my knees as per his instructions, I swore I would persist millimeter by millimeter in an effort to improve my quality of life. I remembered his years at collingwood where they regularly did yoga so I also went to yoga once a week and practiced three or four times a day at home.[short fifteen minute sessions] The progress has been remarkable! Every stretch improves mobility. Within a couple of weeks I was touching my toes for the first time ever, albeit grimacing through the pain but now the pain is almost gone and I have nearly fixed this old injury I have put up with for three decades. The cost to all this is the pain of stretching through an injury. My pal left this minor detail out. The pain is worse in rehab than the original injury as you relive it, but the end result is worth it when you get your life back. I am a yogi for life now and hope this info is of help to some people, love and peace to all, Richo

Glad to hear you are headed down the right track there Richo.

I broke my hip whe I was 15 and had a screw inserted. This eventually led to a back injury, that I have managed - sometimes successfully, sometimes unsuccessfully - for the last 13 years. I went to a sports physio earlier this year, got some orthotics, and have been great ever since. In the upcoming weeks I will go back and see about a further update, but so far so good.

My story relates to yours as my sports physio gave me a range of exercises to do, similar in many ways to yoga, but without the inner peace and tranquility associated with yoga. it really does work. Well done.

Good for you Richo..... :D

I love yoga, and I'm really glad it has helped you...It with massage has cured me of my sciatica that was very bad as well...

I completed a 1 year massage course a few years ago and I know that helps a lot of people as well, so long as you find a good one.....

I'm a yogi for life as well!!

[quote name='Richo' date='Sep 27 2009,

i have lived by this same kind of method although i dont have the patience for yoga lol

but after a very severe accident 7 years ago that left me paralyzed from my arms down and severed all but one of the things that keep your back moving the nerve thingys

i had a fusion and rod placed in and everything stuck back together and was told i would never walk again

i refused to give up and after a debated talk about making a back brace for me they decided to just to shut me up really

i learn t how to place myself in my wheelchair and move about with confidence i got told off for driving to fast mostly

when i was released i booked myself straight into physio and would move my legs myself dayly

i was pregnant so decided that i was going to be on a walking stick by time my baby was born

first month or two it was very hard not to give up and believe the doctors but i knew in myself that strength of will over rides manythings in this world so i kept it up more regulary after a while i could move my legs but verypainfully the physio explained simply no pain no gain

i was exited by this theory and put myself through *** pain wize (i to did not take pain relife as i dont belive in doing so ) i was taking a few steps by time i was 5 months and i was useing the physios exicize bike for some times only half a turn but to cut a story short i was on a walking fram half hour 6 times a day by 8 months and then at the end of eight months i was between a chair the frame and a walking stick my goal

i was unable to have baby natrally as i wanted as they said that by rights i should never have been able to regain use of my back or legs ever and due to this emaculess return of my ability to use them they were not takeing any chances of putting pressure on my spinnal fushion

after a long talk and a diagram on why they couldnt belive my recovery i decided not to risk it and have a cecerian

but reason for this long drawn out story is that if my back ever plays up or starts to pain me i dont lay down i keep on going on with everything just alot slower than normal a lot slower

but pain or not i dont stop and with in a few days im all good but still take it slow for next few weeks

i hardly ever even know i got hurt let a lone a rod but i do have to be careful one good fall and i could not be so lucky

im not a yogi but im defendantly stretchy bendy and flexi

if you dont use it you lose it

no not a yoga bone in this body lol

and sorry but i dont know what compelled actually means it sounds like it means inspired but im not to sure just a guess if so you must be about the only person that i have ever inspired lol

but back to the move it or lose it thing

reality is that your back actually has more time to swell if its left un used it like retains fluid hence the reason for anti inflams just cant be silly and do to much at once thats the rule of back pain and movment
