Me no, I wouldn't use it but then I have 4 cows to share with it. Jack Cheers. Just wanted to know how strict everyone is with the expiry date. Here is a warning, a budgie breeder from around here bought some ivermectin from a bird stall I think in Sydney and applied it to his birds (nest feathers I think and lost the lot), SO BE careful what you buy as what he bought would of have to been oral or the one for sheep.I always buy mine from the vet. last year I bought some from a stall at one of our shields and I think it was watered down because my birds had lice after Kaz will tell you that sad.gif . So I threw that bottle away and went back to my vet and bought some good stuff. smile.gif It is dearer at the vet but at least I am not wasteing my money on inferior products. I use cotton buds and find it mush easier to apply. That is terrible what happened to breeder in Sydney. I bought Ivomec cattle pour on ($74) from a pet supply place. It just seems like a massive waste if i have to bin it in 10months. Link to comment

It is called Beaphar.. Anti Parasite Spot On.. for small birds. It contains Ivermectin 10ug per pippette ( you get two pippettes in the box)and is suitable for use on birds weighing 20-50g. I have only used it once, when I suspected some sort of infestation (black specks on white wing feathers) and this cleared the problem, but it states on the instructions that it's efficacy last 4 weeks after treatment, but there has been no re-occurence of the black specs so I havent used it since a few months ago. This seems like a handy dosage item for people like me with only the one bird. I dont know if this product would be available in Australia or worldwide, it is made by a Dutch company and is distibuted by its UK supplier. Link to comment

Me no, I wouldn't use it but then I have 4 cows to share with it. Jack Cheers. Just wanted to know how strict everyone is with the expiry date. You really can't compare dairy products to pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutical products don't "spoil" like milk. The expiration date on a medicine indicates that the company has done enough research to be able to guarantee that the chemical component will still be active and potent up until the date. In order to protect themselves, the companies will make sure the date they put on the label is well before the date the medicine will stop working. In fact, they aren't interested in spending the money to research how many years until a medicine stops working. They just have to prove it will last for at least a specific length of time. Many medicines last for a long long time after the expiration date, but the company is protecting itself so no one can sue them. Also, it's better for future sales if people throw everything away after a year and buy new. The pharmaceutical industry is very highly regulated, and the companies would find themselves in a lot of trouble if they tried to label products with an expiration date that was close to when a product would actually become inert. My husband works in global regulatory affairs for a large pharmaceutical company. He says that most expiration dates are set over a year early, and many even longer. In our family, we keep everything for one year after the expiration. As for the ivermectin, I plan to keep mine forever. (Unless some day I get a case of scaley face that doesn't respond, and then I will pitch it and buy new.) Link to comment

By the way you can still use the milk after the use by date I do. but my choice. PS would you give your childern medicine out of date? again your choice Jack Link to comment

Most containers will have a section informing the purchaser of the storage method i.e. refridgerate after opening, cool dark place etc. If not stored as directed it will lead to the ineffectiveness of the product. Vitamins are a classic example. Light and heat are the biggest enemies to vitamins. Link to comment

I work for a large pharmacutical/animal health company and can confirm that what Finnie says is correct - HOWEVER - ALL mectins are light sensitive and will break down much more rapidly of stored in a light environment. For longer life, keep in a dark cupboard or in a box. ALSO, degredation studies are done at specific temperatures (Room Temp - 25 degrees) for example and large variations in temps will affect breakdown of chems in different ways. For the best product life keep your chems in a cool/dark/dry environment unless differently stated on the packaging. The cattle product does not need to be mixed down. ooooops - didn't see RIP's post there! Ditto what she said!!!!! Edited July 15, 2010 by nubbly5 Link to comment

Problem: I don't know whether it is safe to use it as I don't know whether it is oral or pour on. If it helps anyone, it's light blue transparent colour, and concentration 5mg/mL. I've been told it is either ingestible or drop on, but I'd like to get some expert advice first. If it is safe, one tiny drop should be enough yes? Thanks in advance Link to comment

I don't have any instructions or box because my friends forgot to tell me where he got it from (presumably the vet). I've done a bit of googling and found that the pour on is the same concentration, but would like some comfirmation. On that topic I managed to fish out Lychee from the larger cage and is currently sitting in a temporary cage. Should I keep him there for a while once the Ivomec has been applied? Link to comment

I DO know that you apply ivomec to guinea pigs topically and if the ivomec you have is the same concentration as the pour-on it should work okay but I'd hate to stake my life on it considering lack of label and unknown source. Thanks nubbly for the insight. I proceeded with giving Lychee the Ivomec, he got two drops by accident (One on feathers, the other under the feathers). I was using a 1ml syringe which gives drops at 10uL.. Is this okay or is it too much? I would hate myself if he got overdosed and ended up like the poor budgie I read about elsewhere whose owner had overdosed it on Ivermectin. Link to comment

To be honest I generally always accidentally overdose my birds and so far have had NO adverse reactions. Usually these are restricted to allergic reactions causing anaphalaxis but if you use heaps there is a chance of ivermectin overdose. Not sure what heaps actually is as I've accidentally squirted about 1 full mL of the cattle pour-on on without any issues...... not going to try and find out however. Link to comment
