Budgiie Bickering / Fighting

Hi Guys,

 

I guess this has probably been asked a million times before, but my situation is that Abbie was friendly with Dale - they were not a pair, I don't breed them, and just the past week or so, Dale has taken attraction to Muffy, another female. During the week Abbie has been picking on Muffy. She's not allowed on the same perch as her or Dale, same food dish etc. Abbie will even chase Muffy to the floor of the cage so that she is no where near Dale.

 

I currently have about 4 feeding containers and plenty of perches, both long and short. So there shouldn't be an issue there.

 

I have taken Abbie out of the cage so Muffy is being picked on, she's a weaker bird because of her french moult.

 

My thing is, I am looking at getting another bird tomorrow, to tame, so will need the cage Abbie is in for the new guy to live in. If I put Abbie back in, will the dominance/possive issue still be there or will it go away? If not, what can I do to fix it?

Good choice, seperate Her and put her in another cage with another bird... that way their's 2 bonded pair's and they can live happier...

How big is the cage and how is it set up ?

Um, at a guess, about 1.6m tall, 1m long and I'm not sure about width, about 60cm?

 

It has one long perch up at top, a few perches about 30 cm long, and a few about 15-20cm long. Also has alot of the swings up the top of the cage, most of my birds sleep up the top at night. All the perches are scattered, so theyre not all up the top or bottom etc

Thats the hassle with tall not wide cages.......perching space.

 

Any way you could arrange that cage to stand on its side, so its wider rather than taller...............then you can fit a few more perches across it and there will be less competition for the top perch.

Nice cage... higher rather then wider is not usually a good thing... budgie's prefer wider space more then height... as a budgie will almost certainly want the highest perch... and that way they can still have the highest perch but alot more space for them to move around on from side to side

If the cage was on its side there would be lots more high perches to choose from and room to get away from each other

Sorry, maybe it's the tiredness kicking in, but how does this fix the problem of fighting over the male?

 

None of the others are worried about the perches, they all sit on the top perch together. It's purely Abbie vs Muffy because of Dale...

Tall cages less top perch space. Wider cage more top perch spaces and room to be away from each other.

 

Kind of like......wider is like a dormitory with lots of beds for everyone.

Taller is more like everyone standing in a lift to sleep and be with each other.

 

Its a space thing.
