Not again  I think all my birds might be sick. Some of you will know, i lost a bird a week or two ago and i don't know why.

Now one of my other birds is very very sick. She keeps fluffing herself up, and her bum is VERY VERY green and disgusting.

What is this? What can I do? its 9pm at night I can't take her anywhere, is there anything i can do? I have a bird in quarantine at the moment taking up my spare cage, not sure where else I can put her if I wanted to take her out.

She wont tweet either, the other birds seem to be picking on her a bit and all she does is kinda squeeks.

She keeps going for water but struggles to stay on the dish i don't know what to do I dont want to lose her :P

Any advise on what to do ASAP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Seperate her and keep her warm over night , then straight to the Vets Tomoz , If she dies still go to the Vet as it most likley will be contagious and you need to protect the rest of your birds.

I agree with lochan, you need to find out what is going through your flock, it sounds like they all may need to be treated and some are showing signs at a later time. Keep us updated.

I ended up taking her to werribee animal hospital... its not looking good for her. She had a very big "clog" you could call it of hard green poo around her bum that the vet cleaned up etc. But she's still very constipated and we suspect is very tired and worn out from straining to poo. She has done 2 small green poos so thats a plus sign atleast. The vet also did a poo smear, and she has a common parasite. We have anti-biotics for that.

She also had some blood in her mouth, that we are unsure of. The vet wasn't a bird specialist. We have oral anti-biotics to give her twice a day, but the vet said if she hasnt made any improvement over night then bring her in tomorrow when more vets are on duty and theres a lady there that knows more about birds etc.

I've isolated her in a spare cage, put her in another spare room with the heater on (not too high, but vet said to put the heater on to keep her warm).

Will see how she is in the morning and probably take her to the vet again anyway.

Will need to do a HUGE clean up of the bird avery to stop other birds getting this parasite. The vet thinks the other birds aren't immediately at risk because she thinks she was more prone to it because she has got other illnesses ie constipation and god knows what else. She said clean the cage out with diluted bleach etc, and monitor the other birds VERY closely because they will try to hide any illness. But since theres now only 2 birds in that cage, it will be easier to monitor funny poo or constipation.

I'm not going to hold my breath on this one, when i was carrying the cage in from the car when I got home, she fell off her perch. She kinda went a bit nuts after having the anti-biotics the vet gave her, trying to climb the cage etc. So we'll see. But i'm not going to hold my breath

I am so sorry

Green poos can be psittacosis and it has an incubation period of 10 days and death is quick... i would get your reaming birds to the vet and tested for everything under the sun.

Green poos can be a number of things, including not eating. BUT you really should take any remaining birds and get them tested. I am sorry you have lost another bird :)

yeah i'm going to take the other 2 to get tested. if they have the same thing she did (i think it was the parasite that killed her, probably gave her the constipation etc) then if we get anti-biotics into them they might make it as they arent showing any signs of sickness... yet.

See if you can find out some specifics so we can learn by this.....the parasite must have another name ?

I think it started with C? lol i'll see if i can research it

Alright I did it the easy way, looked up the anti-biotic they gave us and saw what it was used to treat. They gave us Tribrissen, and apparently one of the things its used to treat is Coccidia, and that sounds familiar, so i'm assuming its that for now. Coccidia is a parasite of the intestines, which explains her problem of constipation and unable to do a poo and why its green etc.

Coccidiosis is usually responsible for runny poos, birds suddenly on the ground and is highly contagious through the droppings.

The so called constipation most likley wasnt constipation at all but the dropping had had a chance to build up around the bottom. When it sets it appears like you would imagine constipation. Budgies rarely get constipation in my experience, and coccidiosis wouldnt or shouldnt cause constipation.

However, cocci is highly contagious and any birds in a cage or aviary need to not be reinfecting themselves from droppings form an ill bird. Big cage cleanup needed.

Can kill birds in no time at all without treatment. Coccivet being a very good one.

Most often affects birds in aviaries where the environment becomes wet throughy rain getting in etc.

Just got back from taking my other birds to the avian vet.

She did a poo smear, weighed them looked at them etc, and they have no signs of sickness. The parasite didnt turn up in their poo. This isn't to say they will remain full of health, it may take time for it to build up in their systems.

She said to monitor them, make sure they dont start sneezing, as the other bird had been sneezing as well.

I did as the vet said last night and cleaned the whole cage with diluted bleach (remembered to thouroughly wash the bleach off) and soaked the perches in warm water (didnt want bleach to be left in the wood grains for the bird to possibly digest)

She also told me she thinks my two remaining birds are in love

i agree with kaz id be cleaning everything id even get new perches the lot if you have dirt floor id dig out the top layer and place freash sand and sawdust on top if not just a really good scrub

clean everything even walls wire the lot

it can stay in aviry for long time going from bird to bird slowly killing them all i would also treat all birds and then take them to vet to be tested after

to make sure poo smears not that expencive and vet usually willing to cut price when your flock is big if it is if not all the better good luck

I did get the poo smear done and it came back clear.

Its an indoor avery thing so no dirt floor i've scrubbed the tray with bleach and all the bars and anything i could find I scrubbed. I've put newspaper on the bottom just incase theres anything there that they can still get to (theres bars at the bottom which were scrubbed that block them getting to the tray but did it anyway)

Just a waiting game now to make sure nothing develops.
