Well I'm Back in Back ...

Macka the Nationals is not only the birds. It's a big part but not the only part. I've spent the past two days with Derick and Debrah Poole at their place and at Swansea.

Nationals: The birds were in fair shape but not great shape.

:)

Well said Daz! The Budgies are the main event but meeting up with other budgie enthusiasts is just as rewarding :)

Funny you say that the WA birds looked good, I think the consensus over here was that our team was not as strong as other years. Compounding this was that preceding the Nationals it was unusually warm here in the West so our birds didn't develop the 'winter' feather- ie. down. Many fretted that the birds would catch their cold over in Burnie and I wouldn't be surprise if this was a reason that numbers for Pre-selection were down this year. Quite a few breeders came thru with numbers, but many more only put in 2-3 birds.

There is a lot more show breeders on here now MACKA............but you want action over a long weekend ? people are off doing stuff and others are recuperating from the Nationals. Other forums with MORE show breeders arent as activce as this one. :)

Well I'm Back in Back ... so they say... Gina you're not the only one the Dave gave the bugg to. :) Dr Harry's farm was great.. yes he was OS and no he doesn't breed budgies at the moment but we were told that he will be starting that back up.

Macka the Nationals is not only the birds. It's a big part but not the only part. I've spent the past two days with Derick and Debrah Poole at their place and at Swansea.

Nationals: The birds were in fair shape but not great shape. WA had better birds. The Sheppard and Flanagan Crest is still being spoken of. Bruce's Recessive Pied was out standing, but I believe that John and Joy McAllister's Recessive last year was better.

The SQ team was very disappointing this year. Enough said on that one.

Congratulations to P Thurn, Paul I think his name was, a great outcome to have 3 winners in the Clearbody, Fallow and Dominant Pied. You could get three more different varieties. I was bidding for Jean Horrobins Fallow to beat him but it wasn't to be.

Congratulations to Henry George for two more wins. Henry did have a tough time as a number of his (and others) birds fell ill on arrival to Burnie... something about the charf.

.....well it is time I get some sleep. So see every one tomorrow. :yuck:

Its Peter Thurn Daz

Bugga guessed wrong, but a great out come for him.

True Fact: most Australian budgerigar breeder's breed mostly show type's, where as the pet type's aren't commonly used for breeding.

i was quiet Surprised myself when i read this bit of information. i would say it's accurate too, cause all the breeder's in my town are show type breeders :)

From a Victorian perspective Pete Thurn was probably our most successful exhibitor at the Nationals. Pete had 5 birds selected in the team, to get 3 firsts, 1 second and a third is remarkable. The second and third came in classes he won anyway!!!

The 3 Nationals this year plus last years win with an Albino put him in very esteemed company. Apart from Bob Smith and Ken Seagrott who both won 3 Nationals in 2006, there wont be too many to equal or better Pete's result.

Agreed, a very successful nationals for Pete. It would take him very close to the hall of fame.

indeed, would love to see his collection. i always get excited when i go to see good breeder's collection's cause its always great to see other people's birds and be able to compare them to your own birds (in your mind) and even get tips from looking at them, gives me idea's on how to improve on my own birds in the process

..... that's got to start some thing.. Kaz is in.. so am I :D

Who said we have last year's Australian President on this forum... ;) I didn't

How's the cold going Gina. :)

I'm in but still battling this horrible cold....... blurg...... pox on Dave Ganzer. I'm really not sure why he needed to give me a hello kiss when he knew he was sick as a dog!!!!!

BUT it was fantastic to catch up with everyone. I LOVE going to the Nats, you seem to be able to get away from the politics an just enjoy everyone's company. Had great chats with Pete Glassenbury, Ian Hannington, Bob Bourke, Jim Fletcher, Allan Baxter etc etc etc etc etc etc. So much fun. AND coz I didn't have any real formal things to do (except on Sunday night I was aked to hand over the trophies to those awarding them to the 1st place winner (sort of like an unusual tag team) and that was easy enough to hide my slightly pissy state so long as I got the classes right) I was really able to relax and get into the weekend - just fabulous!

Seeing the birds is ALWAYS mint and for those starting into breeding exhibition birds I fully recommend you getting to a Nationals to have a look at what you are aiming for. Don't be overwhelmed either. When I asked Ian Hannington how did he breed such a magnificent cinnamonwing he said, "If you been in it as long as I have, something has to pop out sometime". And to some degree he is right too.

Many people seem to buy their way in with expensive top class stock and do well for a few years but its those that continue on selecting out their best and occasionally buying in good outcrosses that seem to be there every year. Henry George's birds are quite recognisable as his birds now.

I can ramble on about the Nats but I feel my mind is kinda clouded by snot and it's going to become a jumbled mess....... >cough, blurg<

Oh just about the birds...... apart from airport transfers etc, the venue at which they were housed was very nicely temperature controlled. I think Tassies know it's damn cold where they live and have it figured out. My birds came back to a way colder bird room at night and didn't look too happy about it ;)

... and you did a great job handing out those awards.. I did notice a bit of a sway but thought it was what I was drinking..

One thing I bring back from the Nationals is the experience of talking to the top breeders. Like having an indepth to Allister Homes about Recessive Pieds or Derik Poole and Roy Blair about thier normals. ....And Gary Armstrong about his Spangles. It is a great experience to hear personelly how they are going.

The Nationals really is an experiene that all new breeders should have. Next year is in Rockhampton then Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The handlers keep each State's birds separate however, in transporting the birds to and from the Show Room and the Show itself of course the birds are mixed up but this is mitigated by the fact that all birds are in show cages.

All breeders put their birds into quarantine once they get home. :)

Its kinda a hard answer as it is not particularly straight forward.

All states have selection processes and then all the selected birds are held together in the care of the states chosen carers (I think each state does similar anyway). So all birds from all competitors are held together and then shipped together to the state at which the competition is held.

They are held seperately in holding cages but within the same room. Usually there is a vet on call if there are any issues arising on the weekend.

Then the birds are returned home again and picked up by their owners who usually institue a quarantine program.

In years past WA used to even bring back purchased auction birds within the same carry cages as the state team but the policy has been put in place that only the team birds travel in the team travel cage - a very sensible change.

The SQ Team is housed in a separate areas after the preselections. From there they are taken to the Nationals and are housed as discribed above. On return back to SQ they are placed in Quarrentine untill the breeders pick them up. It is then up to the breeders to carry out their own quarrentine.
