Is Harry Male Or Female?

Featured Replies

Hi there...as you can see, this is my first post, these forums have been invaluable to me, as a first time owner of a budgie, in fact, any pet at all!

I called my budgie Harry, but am unsure what sex he/she is, can anyone shed any light please? I have had Harry about 6 six weeks now, and not sure of his/her age either.

I have had him/her six weeks now and every day spend some time trying to get him/her used to me, not very successfully, Harry still turns his/her back to me when I get close, but I am sure we will get there!

Thankyou

Robyn

Photo changed to link, due to being over board sizes.

You need to post a picture of his cere that is closer and clearer. However, going from what i can see in that picture your harry is a recessive pied golden face cobalt male around 11-12 weeks of age. The cobalt looks to be a very deep colour, so he may have a violet factor as well. Does he look more purple/blue than straight blue?

I disagree, I'd say a Yf2 violet dominant pied and a COCK... You can also see his Iris ring coming in, confirming he's a dominant pied.

He looks to be about 12 weeks of age as he's just starting his first moult.

Hope this picture is okay, he isn't very accommodating :D

Looks to me like a clear blue sky colour.

And thankyou all for your responses, I am slowly learning!

I woudl have gone with Dean_NZ.

I am not sure that is an iris ring, but rather I think that is part of his eye we see there. His pattern to me indicates Recessive pied, not dominant.

Any more pics?

that last picture definitly looks like an iris ring. BUT

Recessive pieds dont have iris rings so that counts out recessive pied

A dominant pied with iris rings would be fairly mature and it would have a blue cere not a pink cere.

So I do not know.

I have many Dominant pieds (SF) with pink cere's with partly blue forming on it as adults and young birds of his age barely changing at all... It's definatly dominant and only just hitting it's first moult.

okay I still agree with Libby the eyes definitly have iris rings. a dominant pied cock.

Thank you all for your replies, I will try and get some more pics when the light is better tomorrow.

I think that this bird is not just dominant pied. He is a combination of two pied types. As he is showing iris ring I think he is dominant pied and clearflight pied

Double factor dominant pied.....?

I think I will sit back and let you all decide what he is :hap:

Well, From what i can see, it is a 12-13 week old dominant pied Cock-Bird, but Like Neville said, theirs other Pied in him also...

either way its a beautiul bird ^^

Hmm. It could be a double factor dominant pied, but the patterning is very unusual for a single factor dominant pied and doesnt clearflight pied only affect the flights which would be clear anway?

And i still think GF not YF2. Yellow is too golden for YF2.

Edit: Just for us mutation addicts, could you show us a pick of his back and wings? Wing markings would help here

Very interesting nev. I suppose in someway that the clearflight is more expressive when combined with dominant pied. That or the dominant pied is strengthened by the clearflight pied since they must be pretty close on the gene locus and be co-dominant.

They really do look like recessives with irises. You can see how a different mutation on the same gene (or part of the gene) would give you three similar but slightly different mutations. I hope to one day see a pied with a clear belly strip and full wing colouration. Banded pied...

Sorry it took so long, my photography skills bundled with Harry being camera shy is challenging. Hope this is what you want. He won't let me touch him, he travels around on a stick, jumps on quite happily, while I take him out of the cage, but my hand freaks him out, so I just use the stick. - Robyn

I'm gonna guess and say this is a Goldenface Double Facotor Dominant Pied Cobalt Blue Cock. I also think he is older than suggested. The amount of development of the iris ring is more than just 4 months old. I'm gonna say closer to 8-10 months old? This is just my opinion, but wanted to comment, either way this is a beautiful bird... wish he was mine!! :))
