I'd agree with Dave... I'd get another hen, so you have two pairs. But you'll need to quarantine the new hen away from your other birds for 30 days. Then if you add her to the aviary, you'll need more then just two nest boxes, and all at the same high. This is colony breeding and can create many problems such as hens attacking each other and killing chicks etc... As to the age of your birds, it's not wise to breed birds under 12 months of age. I'd find out their age before you breed them. Good luck. Link to comment

Reading your thread reminded me of myself about 2 years ago. I too started out with a similar sized aviary with 4 budgies.... since then I now have about 40 birds, my husband has built me a fantastic cottage style aviary and I am going to my first budgie club meeting in a few weeks. Even numbers always work best.Hi Dave, I did have a violet hen, but lost her about 24hrs after noticing her fluffed up etc. don't know a vet here yet, took her to pet shop chap who's very good, gave her dose of ? on back of neck, said bring her back if no better next day but she died within hours. What do you do? Only hoping its not something passed to remaining birds. Reading up "stuff " maybe air-sac mite? She had a little squeak at pet shop. thanks for your tip but will wait and see how other birds are before buying newby's. RobynWelcome Robyn.
